Bipolar disorder is a an illness that primarily affects mental health. It can cause extreme mood changes in an individual, mood swings ranging from high to low.

These mood swings are also known as mania or hypomania. Research shows that bipolar disorder is present in about 0.3 to 1.2 percent of a population of countries that the study and research was conducted. But the most surprising thing about this illness is that an estimated 46 million people worldwide are diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The illness is almost evenly spread out to both male and female genders.

An international health organisation noted that bipolar disorder is the 6th leading cause of disability in the world today.

Why is bipolar disorder often misunderstood?

Though bipolar disorder is prevalent, this illness is still overlooked. It is for this reason that it is important to understand and be able to recognize the symptoms that may be associated and could lead to bipolar disorder.

Mental health experts described that an individual suffering from bipolar disorder may experience manic episodes, depressive episodes or a person with bipolar disorder may experience both. But the symptoms experienced may have variations depending on each individual.

Depressive episodes normally occur as well lasting for a minimum of 2 weeks. Both depressive and hypomanic symptoms will normally occur for at least 1 to 2 years.

Why is it important to understand bipolar symptoms?

Understanding bipolar symptoms is critical because each include a specific set of diagnostic criteria.

When diagnostic is done a bipolar individual may be qualified to be treated either with medications, Psychotherapy, or a combination of both treatment methodology. However, it is also important to implement strategies after the diagnosis to prevent minor symptoms to become episodes of mania or depression.

What preventive strategies?

Avoiding the use of drugs and alcohol, and also taking medications as accurate as directed. This strategies are important to manage the symptoms and will decrease the severity of the symptoms.
