What is muscular dystrophy?

Muscular dystrophy is not single disease rather it is a general term referring to a group of diseases that can cause gradual weakness and loss of muscle mass.

What causes muscle dystrophy?

An individual suffering from muscular dystrophy has an abnormal genes that interfere with the production of proteins needed to form a healthy muscle.

What is the symptom of muscular dystrophy?

The number one sign of a person with muscle dystrophy is the progressive weakness of muscle. Specific signs and symptoms starts at different age brackets and in different muscle groups, depending on the type of muscular dystrophy.

Treatment of muscular dystrophy:

Physical therapists help children with muscle dystrophy maintain function by managing complications of the disorders progression, such as muscle weakness, deformities and contractures and at the same time encourage movement and mobility for optimal function all throughout all the stages of life. Each child with muscular dystrophy has unique needs based on age, the type of dystrophy, and the progression of symptoms. Physical therapists work with children and their families, as well with other healthcare professionals, to provide holistic care and to develop individualized treatment plans to help children reach their full potential.

If assistive devices are needed, the physical therapist may collaborate with other professionals to determine the best walking aids, braces, or wheelchair for each child.
