Insomnia- a sleep disorder that causes an individual to have a hard time trying to stay asleep or an individual may not have the luxury of being able to sleep at all.

What are the causes of insomnia?

This sleeping disorder could be an end result of these factors: such as anxiety, depression, stress, medications, nicotine, or a sudden change in work or living environment.

Having insomnia is a hazard physically and mentally. It can limit your mental and physical capabilities by lowering your energy levels, that can also trigger mood disorders.

A person suffering from insomnia is also more prone to diabetes, obesity, psychiatric problems, and the dreaded high blood pressure.

What are the symptoms?

Of course being not able to sleep is on the top of the list, while waking up too early is also one symptom, failing to focus or concentrate, sleepiness, digestive problems, fatigue during daytime and so on.

How much sleep do we need?

To function properly, our body needs about 7 - 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

What if I sleep less?

Lack of the required amount of sleeping time will definitely have a negative impact on our physical, mental, and emotional well being.

Insomnia has bee around since time in memorial, it is so common that it affects people from all walks of life no matter what gender, age or race you have.

What remedies do we have?

Well for those who don't like the idea or don't want to use strong medications yet, I have some natural remedies that "may " help get rid of your insomnia without adverse side effects to your body.

Chamomile tea - it contains a compound called apigenin, it acts as a natural sedative. That's why chamomile tea is one of the most common remedy for sleep disorders.

Add 1 teaspoon of chamomile herb to a boiling water stir it then let it boil for a few minutes more, strain the liquid and add a pinch of cinnamon, honey, or lemon slice to the tea. The best time to drink chamomile tea is a few hours evt night before bedtime.

Warm milk - milk contains tryptophan that also acts as a natural sedative. A glass of warm milk can also help our body feel more relaxed. A full or fat free milk will do whichever suits you. You can add a little bit of cinnamon instead of table sugar. Before going to bed drink the warm milk, an hour before you sleep is good.

Cumin seeds- also contains natural sedatives and have a tranquilizing effect that is best in combating insomnia.

Take a ripe banana mash it until it is paste like in texture, then mix 1 teaspoon of cumin powder to your mashed banana. An hour before your sleep eat the cumin banana mix. Munching on this cumin with banana every night may reduce insomnia.

Valerian - contains muscle relaxants and sedatives, a good remedy for insomnia. It makes you fall asleep faster and deeper by relaxing you entire body . Take 2 cups of water then mix with half a teaspoon of valerian grated root. Cover the cup for 15 minutes and strain it. Drinking valerian occasionally may help reduce your insomnia.

Music therapy - it has been proven and on my own experience also that listening music 45 minutes before going to sleep can help fight insomnia. Of course you have to choose relaxing music that can be soothing to the mind and body to create a much better and deeper sleeping.
