Report on Bill Seeking to Prohibit Smoking in Public Places

Question: A report on a bill seeking to prohibit smoking in public places.

Prohibit Smoking in Public Places

Answer: Dhaka, 8 February 2018: Health and Family Welfare Minister yesterday introduced a bill in parliament seeking to prohibit smoking in public places and public transports.

The public places included educational institutions, government, semi-government and autonomous offices, library, lift, hospital, clinic, court building, airport, sea and river port buildings, railway stations and bus terminal buildings, ferry, cinema, Covered exhibition centre, theatre hall, children’s park and other places designated by gazetted notifications.

The bill also seeks to provide for a restriction on the advertisement of tobacco products in cinema, government, private TV channels, sale of films or videotapes containing tobacco products, the publication of advertisement in book, magazine, leaflet, handbill, billboard, newspaper, etc.
