Food is a part of life, it is a human basic needs, we can't live without it. But I would like to share some food myths in the Philippines. It is one of the traditional practices that is being passed through generations.
This belief is applied by most Filipino, while other fellow men stop from doing and believing in these traditions.
Here are some of the Filipino Myths;
1.Eating "pancit" on a special occasion like a birthday.
Pancit is Filipino cuisine, it is made up of rice noodles, introduced by Chinese immigrants in the Philippines. Some establishments were specializing in different types of pancit.It symbolizes longevity of life,that's why they don't cut it.
Pancit bihon
This is my favorite kind of pancit, it's so good to pair with loaf bread. My family used to cook this during birthdays because of the traditional belief that if you cooked pancit on your birthday, you can have a good life. I like it with a lot of spices and pepper with lemon on the top. I used to cooked pancit every birthday of my family not just for the superstitious but it's my favorite.
2.Eating twin banana during pregnancy
Some Filipino belief is that, if you eat a twin banana during pregnancy, you will give birth to a twin baby. Other people say that its sounds are funny but as of this generation, it is still existing. Every time there is a pregnant woman who wants to eat a banana they make sure it's a twin, especially the elderly will say, "don't eat that".During my pregnancy, I was being told by my parents not to eat twin bananas bit because I craved with fruits I still eat. Of course, it has no scientific explanation at all.
3.Bringing food from the funeral is not good
During a funeral, there are a lot of foods available on the table, especially during the last days of mourning. And it is a belief that if you bring the leftover foods to your house it has no good for you, that there will be a chain of bad luck to come in your household. That's why every time there was food at the funeral we are not allowed to bring it home.
4.If your neighbor give you a food, return the plate and don't wash it.
Elderly told their children not to washed the plate from the neighbor to avoid bad luck, that if you wash the plate you wipe our blessings.When I was a kid I was a very shy to return a plate to our neighbor when it is still looks greasy.
5.If you are eating and suddenly the fork or spoon will be dropped on the floor, there is someone who will come home.
During my childhood, my parents used to tell us about it.
6.If you are eating and you will be choked there is someone who is often talking about you.
These myths of Filipinos are still involved today, and maybe there are some Filipino food myths that is not mentioned here.When say myths, this beliefs and traditions without determinable basic fact or basis.
Every nation have different cultures and traditions, so here in Philippines we have a lot of beliefs but not all Filipinos have related to this myths, other Filipinos have also disagree with this things because according to them there's nothing happened ever if you will follow it or not.
