I would like to tell you a story about an elementary school life of a Baby Boomer like me.😊 Yes, I was in primary school when the 1st man landed on the moon and when Ms. Gloria Diaz won the Miss Universe title!😊 Remembering my childhood days especially attending a public elementary school brings back happy memories. My school was about a 10-minute walk from our house. I usually go to school with my siblings or my classmates and best friend walking safely. To alert our friends that it is time to go, we go near their house and clap our hands to the tune of "1 2, 1 2 3, 1 2 3 4 , LET'S GO!" That was our standard signal! Only a few phones were available during those period and we don't have it. It was a luxury! Before going to school, my father would give my siblings and I, a baon of 10¢ each. We were so grateful for that. Sometimes, my Mama prepared some baon like pan de sal with scrambled egg palaman, or rice with boiled egg or fried fish. The 10¢ baon was for me to use freely. I could buy snacks for recess, if I didn't bring some food baon. During that time, my 5¢ could already buy 2 pcs of boiled bananas or 2 pcs buko bar. I will then look for a friend who has another 5¢ and willing to have a banana and cold treats. We shared the bananas and buko bar (one for each other) , sat down on a bench and enjoyed a good refreshing snacks. We call that " kurambos", Hahaha. Have you tried it? I always try my best to bring food from home to avoid spending my 10¢ so it could go to my savings. We were taught to save. I could recall that I had a booklet where I can insert a 10¢ coin in rows until all the rows are filled. I could then use my savings to buy what I like on Christmas. I remembered that we still go home for lunch so we had to walk back to our homes after morning session to eat. Sometimes we had time for a short siesta, then go back for our afternoon session. After our classes, my friends and I passed by the barrio plaza beside the church and play before heading home. It was our fun time. Some would rent and ride bicycles. Since I don't know how to ride a bicycle, I climbed church wall until I could reach a small flat extended surface and walk on it as far as it reached. A very good exercise for a skinny girl in me. Some friends would join me too and we raced who could reach the finish line in the shortest period. We also played hide and seek. We made sure that we go home when sun is still up, or else we'll get some scolding! Whenever our classmates and I meet together these days (before pandemic happened) we reminished our good old days and enjoyed every minute of it. We go back remembering our youthful days smiling, laughing and thankful that we are still here to enjoy life totally different from our younger years. Thanks for listening. Have a great day everyone!
