Android fans have been placed on red alert as Google's hugely-popular mobile operating software could be replaced on millions of devices worldwide. Android is one of the most popular operating systems on the planet, with over two billion devices running the Google-developed software. But the duopoly between Android and iOS that has long dominated the smartphone marketplace looks set to be shaken up in a big way next year.

That's because Huawei has finally confirmed plans to tackle Google and Android head-on with its own mobile operating system. The announcement was made during the annual Huawei Developer Conference, or HDC for short.
US companies – including Google – have been prevented from doing business with Huawei after it was placed on a blacklist from the White House. That means Huawei is no longer able to rely on the Google Play Store to handle apps, ebooks, movie rentals and updates. It also means Huawei P40 owners are unable to download Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, and dozens of other popular Google-designed apps.
To ensure its smartphones get new features and regular updates, Huawei has confirmed plans to turn to its own in-house operating system, known as HarmonyOS.
During the latest HDC, Huawei announced that HarmonyOS is set to enter into beta on smartphones this year with a general release pencilled in for 2021.
