Maintaining oral hygiene requires constant care. Unfortunately, sometimes that is not enough and it happens that we get lesions called canker sores.
Namely, the cause of aphthae is mainly a consequence of a drop in immunity, and the reasons for their formation can be quite varied. From local trauma after tooth extraction, through stress, hormonal influences, and allergies, the appearance of some diseases, lack of certain vitamins, to poor oral hygiene.
In addition to the above, canker sores also occur due to some skin diseases, diseases of the digestive organs, cardiovascular diseases, connective tissue diseases, and the like. A disease that can be a trigger for canker sores is leukemia, as well as chemotherapy and radiation.
Canker sores occur mainly in the period from one week to 10 days, maturing and disappearing. Severe forms of canker sores can last longer, and the symptoms are easily visible.
Canker sores - how to recognize it?
Aphtha literally means "ulcer on the mouth" in Greek. Most aphthae appear on the epithelial surfaces in the mouth, wherever the mucous membrane is soft, from the tonsils and oral cavity, through the tongue to the inner side of the upper or lower lip, on the gums, inside the cheeks, and sometimes on the outer edge of the lip.
Canker sores can sometimes cause debilitating pain, and if there are more of them, they can create a process that leads to loss of appetite and weight loss due to malnutrition, which is quite a rare case.
Types of aphthae
Small canker sores - This is the most common type of canker sores. They are small (less than 1 cm) and oval in shape with a red edge. Although they can be painful, they are not contagious or associated with any other disease. They pass in a period of 7 to 10 days.
Major canker sores - This type of canker sore is a slightly more severe form of the previous ones. These are larger aphthae (over 1 cm) and significantly deeper penetration into the mucosa. Due to that, the healing of wounds is longer, it can take up to 6 weeks. In some cases, fever may occur.
Herpetiform aphthae - This type is characterized by a large number of minor lesions (10-100) that form a single cluster or form an ulcer. They can be extremely painful. They usually occur later in life. Wound healing takes between one and two weeks.
Treatment of canker sores
Regardless of the type of aphthae in question, After gel can be used effectively in the fight against them.
After the gel is formulated on a natural basis, in a bioadhesive base, which provides the maximum effect. It immediately relieves pain and reduces the symptoms of inflammation of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. After gel accelerates the healing of erosions by stimulating epithelialization. As many as five natural ingredients are incorporated into the bioadhesive base of After gel.
Hyaluronic acid, in the form of sodium hyaluronate, has a protective effect on damaged mucous membranes because it forms a protective barrier, but also contributes to accelerating tissue regeneration and reducing swelling. By forming a protective layer on the damaged mucous membrane, sodium hyaluronate protects the exposed nerve endings from further irritation, which results in the alleviation of painful sensations.
Clove essential oil in After gel effectively relieves pain, while propolis and tea tree oil have an antimicrobial effect, preventing the development and spread of infection.
Aloe vera, known for its regenerative and soothing properties, contributes to faster healing of the changes.
