Portraying my maternal grandmother / Retratando a mi abuela materna

This drawing I made taking as reference an old photo of when she was about 35 years old, the same was a special request from her, which had postponed several times for not feeling able to do quality work yet. Art is a process of continuous learning and growth, after countless previous drawings and having practiced different techniques and materials I felt confident enough to embark on this project. As a result of this work, I hope you like it.

Este dibujo lo realice tomando como referencia una foto vieja de cuando ella tenía más o menos 35 años, el mismo fue un pedido especial por parte de ella, el cual lo había postergado varias veces por no sentirme todavía capaz de hacer un trabajo de calidad. El arte es un proceso de continuo de aprendizaje y crecimiento, después de incontables dibujos previos y de haber practicado distintas técnicas y materiales me sentí con la confianza necesaria para embarcarme en este proyecto. Teniendo como resultado esta obra, espero que sea de su agrado.

Drawing development / Desarrollo del dibujo

When making a portrait, the main thing is to adapt our view and capture the basic essence of the face, in order to bring a three-dimensional figure to a two-dimensional field. First of all, the sketch or guidelines of the drawing are drawn using a 2H pencil, taking care not to squeeze the pencil too much. In this step we are going to determine the proportions and distinctive characteristics of the face.

Al realizar un retrato, lo principal es adaptar nuestra vista y captar la esencia básica del rostro, para poder llevar una figura tridimensional a un campo bidimensional. Primeramente se traza el boceto o líneas guías del dibujo usando un lápiz 2H teniendo cuidado de no apretar mucho el lápiz. En este paso vamos a determinar las proporciones y características distintivas del rostro.

In the next step, effects such as highlights and midtones are determined. For the light areas I use the white charcoal pencil, while in the middle sections I apply the graphite HB and 2B blurring and combining shades.

En el siguiente paso se determinan efectos como lo son luces y tonos medios. Para las zonas de luz uso el lápiz de carboncillo blanco, mientras que en las secciones medias aplico el grafito HB y 2B difuminando y combinando matices.

Once I determine the basic outline of the composition and sections of the face, I go on to detail and define the distinctive features of the person using the 2B pencil, start with the eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth, and reinforce the darker areas using the 4B pencil.

Una vez que determino el esquema básico la composición y secciones del rostro, prosigo a detallar y definir los rasgos distintivos de la persona utilizando el lápiz 2B, empiezo por los ojos, cejas, nariz y boca, además que se refuerzo las zonas más oscuras usando el lápiz 4B.

Having the features ready I continue to develop the hair, I begin using the HB pencil to make base lines to mold the shape of it, I define the areas of light and dark what will provide volume, applying the HB pencil for the lighter areas passed through the 4B for the shadow sections.

Teniendo los rasgos ya listos prosigo a desarrollar el cabello, empiezo usando el lápiz HB para hacer líneas base para moldear la forma del mismo, defino las zonas de luz y oscuridad lo que aportara volumen, aplicando el lápiz HB para las áreas más claras pasado por el 4B para las secciones de sombra.

To finish, we go on to outline the details that will give the expression of the face, such as expression lines and details in eyebrows and brightness in the eyes, in this step in addition to using the pencils mentioned above I support myself with the moldable eraser to obtain areas of brightness, in addition to reinforce the areas of shadows to create a greater contrast in the drawing.

Para finalizar, pasamos a perfilar los detalles que darán la expresión del rostro, tales como líneas de expresión y detalles en cejas y brillo en los ojos, en este paso además de usar los lápices antes mencionados me apoyo con el borrador moldeable para obtener zonas de brillos, además de reforzar las áreas de sombras para crear un mayor contraste en el dibujo.
