Why does the diopter change? And how often should you go for an ophthalmological examination? Read on!
Primarius Dr. Valentina Dimitrijevic Milovanovic, head of the contact lens cabinet at the Eye Clinic of the Clinical Center of Serbia, says that the exact cause of the diopter change can only be determined by a complete ophthalmological examination.
- In two or three years, the diopter in normal farsightedness can normally increase by +075 to +1 - says Dr. Valentina Dimitrijević Milovanović. - If lenses are worn, an examination should be performed once every three months or six months.
If glasses are worn, a complete ophthalmological examination with measurement of blood pressure and examination of the fundus is required once a year.
Can diopters be stopped with glasses or a lens?
- It is believed that semi-hard lenses lead to a slight flattening of the cornea, which can slightly stop myopia. There are new types of soft and semi-hard lenses that slow down the growth of myopia.
Recent studies have shown, however, that neither lenses nor glasses can completely stop the growth of diopters. Good prevention is for children to spend more time outside, in daylight. In the Scandinavian countries, there are laws in schools that prescribe this.
Are myopia and farsightedness somehow connected?
- These are two separate diagnoses. There is no connection, neither causes the other. One of the characteristics of farsightedness is that it cannot be seen clearly either at a distance or at close range. Sometimes accommodation spasm can occur, so people who have not corrected farsightedness may show minus diopters at some point due to problems and muscle cramps.
Thus, glasses can be prescribed in the minus, and the patient's vision is actually in the plus. To avoid that, it is obligatory to dilate the pupils when there is a suspicion of an accommodation spasm.
