After the successful launch of Phase 0 of Etherium 2.0, Vitalik Butterin published an updated roadmap of the next stages of the new blockage development.

The current development of Etherium 2.0 is divided into phases. This week, Phase 0 of Etherium 2.0 was launched: the "signal chain" (Beacon Chain), which made the stacking available. After Phase 1 is deployed, data shading will appear, extending storage capabilities without directly affecting application performance. After phase 2 activation, transaction sharading will be presented and bandwidth will be provided for several thousand transactions per second. The network will fully migrate to the Proof-of-stake consensus, and ETH1 and ETH2 will be combined.

Vitaly Buterin today announced the adoption of the new Etherium 2.0 roadmap, which has become more flexible and completely excludes such terms as Phase 1 and Phase 2. Defining the characteristics of each phase is now more independent of each other and includes the work done for Ethereum 1.x.

The updated roadmap covers all developments of the Ethereum team and provides a detailed overview of the platform's further development, including approximate update activation dates.

Key features of the next important milestone are the transition of Ethereum 1.0 to Proof-of-Stake, the introduction of lightweight Eth2 clients to Eth1 and data sharding. All this was previously planned in phases 1 and 1.5. An important change in the new roadmap is that these three phases are largely independent and can be implemented in parallel.

Major scaling improvements can be achieved by performing the last two functions, as they will allow to place rollups in the structure of data shards. Rollups is a Layer 2 scaling technology that takes the computation outside the network, but ensures that it is correct with evidence stored inside the network. This enables data shading to deliver more than 10,000 transactions per second once light clients and shards are deployed.

However, according to Buterin, progress in data and light client sharading is still at or below 50%. This means that it will take at least a year to deploy Conditional Phase 1.

Progress with stateless clients and Ethereum 1.x initiative is also below 50%. Work on the cryptographic polynomial commitment technology, which, as Buterine said earlier, will be the key to implementing non-linking clients, is also far from complete. Similarly, work on many other advanced types of cryptographic technologies and an improved virtual machine is still in its infancy.

After the publication of the roadmap, Buterin called for the implementation of EIP 1559 as soon as possible. It aims to solve problems with the existing transaction fees model, which forces users to pay more than necessary. The proposed structure of commissions in the EIP 1559 autonomously adapts to the requirements of the network and gives users the opportunity to pay only the commission that is actually necessary for the transaction.
