Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced the launch of his own Bitcoin node, reaffirming his confidence in the future of cryptocurrencies.
Dorsey posted with the caption "Launching Bitcoin." By doing so, he made a reference to the late cryptographer Hal Finney, to whom Satoshi Nakamoto sent the first 10 BTC more than 12 years ago. Finney tweeted the same phrase on January 11, 2009, a few days after the Bitcoin genesis blockchain was launched. The only difference between the tweets is the presence of the Bitcoin hashtag and the emoji with its logo in Dorsey's tweet.
In the comments, users asked Dorsey if he runs the node on a Raspberry Pi microcomputer. The Twitter founder replied that he uses an Apple computer with an M1 chip. This chip provides fast application performance with lower power consumption.
Dorsey has long been a bitcoin supporter. In 2014, engineers at his payments company Square began thinking about bitcoin integration. Speaking at a conference in 2018, Dorsey called bitcoin "the currency of the Internet." In late 2019, Dorsey announced the opening of a cryptocurrency division of Square called Square Crypto to develop Bitcoin infrastructure. Square Crypto has made numerous grants to Bitcoin developers, among them a Lightning Network developer under the alias ZmnSCPxj.
In the fall, Dorsey showed even more faith in bitcoin when Square acquired 4,709 BTC worth $50 million, joining the ranks of major institutions investing in cryptocurrencies.
