You think a country without cities, public transportation, or an army is a fantasy. In fact, there is such a country and it is called Niue.

It is a towering atoll formed by three vast coral reefs. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, about 6,000 kilometers from Australia.

The settlements, scattered over an area of 261 km2, are home to just over 1600 people. The state does not accept urbanization, so there is little infrastructure, including good roads and no public transportation. For inhabitants of megacities it sounds quite wild, but the locals are literate and educated, gladly accepting visitors. The country has a rather ambitious soccer team and a gift for travelers and locals is free Wi-Fi.

About local

Niue has a legislature, an executive, and a judiciary that operate under the Niue Constitution Act. There are 14 districts in this small territory. The largest district, Alofi, consisting of 1 village, has about 400 people. The smallest, Namukulu, has 14 local residents. Niue's demographic situation remains deplorable, as population outflows to Australia and New Zealand cause the number of local residents to decrease year after year.

Niue Island in the ocean has

The island was discovered and mapped by European navigators in the 18th century. It was first spotted among the waves by James Cook, who landed here in 1774. But the locals didn't welcome his presence, so he named it Savage, from English for "wild. In 1901 the island passed to New Zealand, but 73 years later the locals regained independence and in 1974 Niue became a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand.

There are no cities on the island, only 14 villages. Most of the locals live in the capital city of Alofi. The Niueans have dual citizenship - Niue and New Zealand. They speak two languages, and the New Zealand dollar is in circulation on the island. From time to time the local Niue dollar is minted on the island. It features funny characters such as Snoopy or Pokémon.

There is no active army as protection is provided by the New Zealand Armed Forces. The island is paved with 2 roads with a total length of 230 km. The Internet service provider appeared here in 1997, it distributes Wi-Fi all over the island. Anyone can connect to it in cafes, hospitals and other public places.

All covered with greenery, absolutely all

The climate on the island is hot and moderately humid. The temperature never drops below +20℃. Despite this, the local soils are not fertile, as they are represented by boulders, and the bedrock has a lot of magnesium, phosphorus and elevated pH.

In spite of this, Niue has tropical forests and coastal green spaces. There are more than 600 species of plants, almost a third of which are endemic. The fauna of the islanders has suffered a lot from human impact, so many mammals were brought here from other islands and continents, but they feel great here.
