TheĀ tigerĀ (Panthera tigris) is the largestĀ extantĀ catĀ speciesĀ and a member of theĀ genusĀ Panthera. It is most recognisable for its dark vertical stripes on orange-brown fur with a lighter underside. It is anĀ apex predator, primarily preying onĀ ungulatesĀ such asĀ deerĀ andĀ wild boar. It is territorial and generally aĀ solitary but socialĀ predator, requiring large contiguous areas ofĀ habitat, which support its requirements forĀ preyĀ and rearing of its offspring. Tiger cubs stay with their mother for about two years, before they become independent and leave their mother'sĀ home rangeĀ to establish their own.
The tiger once ranged widely from theĀ Eastern Anatolia RegionĀ in the west to theĀ Amur RiverĀ basin, and in the south from the foothills of theĀ HimalayasĀ toĀ BaliĀ in theĀ Sunda islands. Since the early 20th century, tiger populations have lost at least 93% of their historic range and have been extirpated inĀ WesternĀ andĀ Central Asia, from the islands ofĀ JavaĀ and Bali, and in large areas ofĀ SoutheastĀ andĀ South AsiaĀ andĀ China. Today's tiger range is fragmented, stretching fromĀ SiberianĀ temperate forestsĀ to subtropical andĀ tropical forestsĀ on theĀ Indian subcontinentĀ andĀ Sumatra.
The tiger is listed asĀ endangeredĀ on theĀ IUCN Red List. As of 2015, the global wild tiger population was estimated to number between 3,062 and 3,948 mature individuals, with most remaining populations occurring in small pockets isolated from each other. Major reasons for population decline includeĀ habitat destruction,Ā habitat fragmentationĀ andĀ poaching. This, coupled with the fact that it lives in some of the moreĀ densely populated placesĀ onĀ Earth, has caused significantĀ conflicts with humans.
The tiger is among the most recognisable and popular of the world'sĀ charismatic megafauna. It featured prominently in ancientĀ mythologyĀ andĀ folkloreĀ and continues to be depicted in modern films and literature, appearing on manyĀ flags,Ā coats of armsĀ and asĀ mascotsĀ for sporting teams. The tiger is theĀ national animalĀ ofĀ India,Ā Bangladesh,Ā MalaysiaĀ andĀ South Korea.
