Juvenile prison is a criminal justice system for the youth under the age of majority. For it there are detention centers and they are called youth detention center , Juvenile detention centre (JDC)or juvenile hall etc. If a youth do a crime, he or she has to face this kind of prison which called "Juvenile prison". For juvenile's there is a separate court system and it is called "Juvenile Court".

When a youth commits any crime, as there system, he or she have been sentenced for a period of time. How long they have to be present or detained, it will be depend on the crime they committed. If one make a crime which is very dangerous for this he or she have to face a long term prisonment.

If a youth is sent by the court to a Juvenile detention centre, there are two types of facilities for them. One is secure detention the other one is secure confinement.

Secure detention means that utes are sentenced for usually short period of time in many facilities in order to await next or current trial hearings and further placement decisions. By keeping them in secure detention ,it ensures appearance in court besides keeping the community safe and risk free for the youths. This type of advantage is usually called a "Juvenile hall ",which is a holding Centre for juvenile offender.

On the other hand ,secure confinement defined that the Juvenile has been committed by the court into the detention centre a secure juvenile correctional facility for a specific time of a specific program , which duration can be from a few months to many years.

Juvenile detention is not meant to be vindictive. Rather juveniles kept in secure custody usually e receive care consistent with the principle of parens patruae, i.e., the state as parent. The state or local authority is usually responsible for providing education, recreation, health ,counselling, assessment and other intervention  services in order to maintaining a youths well-being during his or her stay in custody.

Normally speaking ,secure detention is reserved for juveniles considered to be a threat to public safety of the court process, although in many cases youth are sentenced for neglecting or  violating court orders. Status offenders, i.e., youth charged with running away from home alcohol possession and other offences that are not crimes if committed by adults., can only be sentenced for 24 hours or less, sexy video while initial investigation is completed and other alternatives are arranged.

The office of Juvenile justice and delinquency prevention found the five types of residential programs for youths to be a broad range, which included detension, correction, camp, community-based and residential treatment. The reason for the huge difference in placement options for youth because we cannot find a uniform definition of residential treatment programs. As a result, it creates a lack of compatibility across states and a huge difference of names for secure detention and Secure confinement centres for juveniles.

Many services are supposed to be provided to the juveniles at detention centres. Services vary from facility to facility but in general the programs and services provided to the youth are according to their needs. Education is seen by many detention centers primary need that must be provided to detained youth. Highly Effective schools having Juvenile facilities provide High School curriculum ,opportunities for general equivalency diploma (GED) preparation ,special education services certified teachers small student to teacher ratio connection with families and vocational training opportunities. On the other hand most of the youth cannot get all these opportunities. They did not even get well trained teachers ,libraries ,even books that they need. So the service that the juveniles get from the detained centres vary from state to state and it hamper their well upbringing.

In researches there found a strong connection between youth who commit crimes and mental health concerns. A high number of juveniles can be found with mental health illness in juveniles facilities.

Many different mental health treatment strategies can be found in Juvenile detention centres. The authority need to decide that what type of strategy work on what type of youth. Mental health services that can be provided to the youth include individual counselling ,group counseling, crisis counseling, family intervention medication management and transition planning.

Juvenile detention centres and long duration confinement facilities have constantly been discussed and debated around two major concerns. One is overcrowding and the other one is in effectiveness. Is the number of Juvenile cases has increased in the past 15 years, the system has become overpopulated and overcrowded. And most of the times this leads to the prpblem of too many residents and not enough empty beds in detention centers.Though juvenile prison is important for maintaining a well society but sometimes it hamper youths mental up bringing also.

Tens of thousands of children are sentenced in youth prisons. Thousands more are also Locked Up in adult prisons and jails. In 2010 approximately 70800 juveniles were sentenced in detention centre alone. About 5 lac youth are brought to detention centres in that year.
