Humanoid Drummer Have you ever played a drum set or anything similar? I have tried percussion instruments, including a drumset, bongo, kango, etc. Hold on; I may not know the proper names of those percussion instruments in English. I have seen a lot of percussion instruments since my childhood. We used to get toy percussion instruments at most rural and urban fairs. I learned the Indian percussion instrument called Tabla. It is one of the most sophisticated and popular instruments used in all forms of Indian music, classical, folk, and modern music. But have you ever seen a humanoid drummer? I guess you remember those spring-operated mechanical toys playing drums. I see many such things operated by electrical motors and used in roadside temples in India! Recently, I read tech news in the IEEE Spectrum magazine about a project of humanoid drummers! Yes, a robot is trained to play a drumset! As I learned a little music and am actively interested in STEM research, I am curious why such a research project in the creative field of performing arts exists. (2) Humanoid robot is very challenging and will teach many lessons. (3) Humanoid robots are very appealing to the market. **Why is the humanoid drumming subject chosen?** It was a public demand. Also, one of the company's engineers suggested drumming as a subject of the next area because she started to learn to play a drumset. **What is the most challenging aspect of humanoid drumming?** The robotic body actions needed to play a drumset asked for a lot of complex motions of the body parts. The humanoid drumming required assigning sequences to each arm and leg of the robot and generating continuous collision-free whole-body trajectories, which became tough hardware constraints.  **How would the humanoid drumming project help robotics research?** The experience of humanoid drumming would give an immense boost to mastering complex automation projects that involve multibody engagements. The automatic humanoid drumming would help to start projects with other musical instruments. Concluding thoughts People may think that robots would kill job opportunities. Robots may be utilized in challenging situations where humans can't reach them. Robots may be deployed in hazardous environments/situations where the human labor force can't work due to safety reasons. The future is between the job crisis and the most modern R&D in robotics.
