Electric Vehicles Make Her Career Electric vehicles are not uncommon nowadays. One of my colleagues bought an electric bike (e-bike) about twelve years ago. He used to charge the bike every night and come to his workplace riding the e-bike. The maximum speed was limited to around 20 km/hour. He and his spouse were very satisfied with the e-bike. During the twelve years, they changed the battery only twice. They are still using the same e-bike without issues. There are many dealers for e-bikes in our locality. The leg-paddled tricycles also now add chargeable battery-driven electric motors. There are light three-wheeler electric bikes called Todo or Tuktuk which are now being used in semi-urban and rural areas. I suppose these cheap and lighter varieties of EVs are changing semi-urban and rural public as well as personal transport systems of Asia and Africa at an affordable cost. I read a feature article on EVs in the IEEE Spectrum magazine. The article detailed the career journey of a Kenyan engineer who has been successfully working in the EV industry for over a year. A Kenyan girl's life revolves around EVs. The supply chain sectors require humans to use bikes for the delivery of goods and items. The supply chains require more kilometers of travel. The main problem with EV batteries is that they can run for a limited range. And, the batteries take many hours to charge. A startup called ARC Ride, founded in 2020 deals business in a variety of EVs, including e-bikes, scooters, motorcycles, and Tuktuks (or Todos). In Nairobi, ARC Ride started a facility called "Battery Swapping" where users can swap their drained batteries and take a fully charged battery in certain swapping stations in the city. The company's mobile app helps users locate the nearest battery swapping station.
