Massive data breach of a national digital ID system!

India's Digital Identity system Aadhaar's recent data breach made it clear that Aadhaar is highly security vulnerable and a broken ID system!

More than 81 crores (0.81 billion) of Indian citizens' personal data, including their passport details, addresses, email IDs, phone numbers, biometric data, and most probably also the encrypted passwords, are available on the dark web!

The Aadhaar database also leaked earlier in 2018 and 2019!

Aadhaar should have been scrapped!

  • These were the views of the security researchers since 2017, even before Aadhaar was commissioned and enforced on citizens.

I completely agree with their views that Aadhaar should have been scrapped!

What do you think?

In 2018, the entire Aadhaar data was available only for INR500!

  • A reporter of an Indian newspaper, "The Daily Tribune," published from Chandigarh, India, showed in January 2018 that the entire Aadhaar database was available for a meager INR500.

  • The government penalized the reporter with legal suits for disclosing the data breach news of the Aadhaar.

What a pity for the administrators of the Aadhaar and the government!

The reporter should have been rewarded for disclosing the defects of the Aadhaar system. The Aadhaar developers could have utilized this information as a warning and corrected the system.

Aadhaar-enabled Payment System and Fingerprint Spoofs caused innumerable banking frauds since 2017!

  • Aadhaar-enabled Payment System, biometrics theft, and fingerprint spoofs helped criminals loot citizens' bank accounts.

Aadhaar has become a pain to poor Indian citizens because of its defects.

The Kolkata police understood that Aadhaar and biometrics are real problems.

  • They urged the government to mask the biometrics on the Aadhaar system.

What is to be done with Aadhaar?

The members of the Indian government should consider seriously what is to be done with Aadhaar.

  • A mere high-power investigation can't solve the technological defects of a broken digital identity system.

The Aadhaar developer team and the Indian government must take responsibility for these data breaches of Aadhaar.

  • The Aadhaar team must answer why they created the Aadhaar-enabled Payment System and incorporated security-lowering biometrics as an authentication factor.

Indian citizens are losing money from bank accounts via AePS and fingerprint spoofs. The team Aadhaar must answer why these happened for so many years.

  • The members of the earlier UPA and the current NDA government must answer.

They can't go away without giving reasons because playing with the security and privacy of the citizens is a punishable crime.
