NFTs or non-fungible tokens are digital tokens that cannot be changed or altered after its created. It gives the holder the right to sell the NFT and make each piece of artwork uniquely identifiable.

In 2021 and 2022, the NFT boom took over the markets with several investors investing in NFTs, and several creators making millions from selling NFTs. Here is a list of the 7 most expensive and signifiant NFTs sold.

7. Source Code of www ($5.4m)

In 2021, a block-chain based token of the original source code of the world wide web was sold as an NFT for $5.4 million by Sotheby. The original source code of the world wide web was written by Tim Berner-Lee in 1989 to navigate and access information on the internet. The value of the source code NFT is derived from the fact that the world wide web and the NFT were both created by the same original creator.

6. Ocean Front

Mike Winkelmann, aka Beeple, sold an NFT called Ocean Front for $6 million in March 2021. The NFT poses a bleak futuristic scenario and touches on an important theme of climate change in the 21st century. Justin Sun, the founder of TRON was the winning bidder at the auction. Beeple donated all the proceeds to charities helping with climate change.

5. Crossroads ($6.6m) Beeple

At the time crossroads sold for $6.6 million, it was the most expensive NFT sold, again by Beeple. Beeple created two videos and depending on the results of the US 2020 elections, either one of the two videos would play. One video featured Trump winning, and the second featured Trump losing. Biden won the election and we remember this famous video.

4. Crypto Punk 5822 ($23.7m)

Cryptopunk 5822 was sold in 2022 for $23.7 million making it the most expensive cryptopunk sold till today. The punk was purchased by Deepak Thapliyal the CEO of Chain. While Larvalabs created 10,000 cryptopunks, only 9 alien punks were released making them limited edition collectibles. Crypto Punk 7523, another alien cryptopunk, was purchased for $11.8 million through a Sotheby bidding auction in 2021.

3. Clock ($52.8m)

The clock is an NFT artwork that features a timer with the number of days Julian Assange has spent in prison. The Wikileaks founder managed to raise $52.8 million through a DAO that was used towards legal fees while Assange fights extradition to the USA while in prison in the UK.

2. The First 5000 days ($69.3m) Beeple

Another Beeple artwork that makes the list of most expensive artwork sold features ‘The First 5000 Days’ that sold for $69 million (nice) at Christies in 2021. Vignesh Sundaresan was the buyer of the NFT artwork that features 5000 images that Beeple started working on in 2007.

1. Merge ($91.8 million)

The merge is the most expensive NFT sold for $91.8 million by Pak and was purchased by 28983 collectors. No one knows the identity or identities of Pak, however Pak also created Archillect, an AI to discover and share popular media.
