Room, is an utterly beautiful book released in 2010, dedicated to the kidnapping of the author’s daughter and is based on it.
First of all, it was a nice surprise to find that the plot was gripping because you don’t expect the next events as they happened and there is a plot twist when their lives were no longer in danger. The characters and script were better than I expected, they were completely shocking due to the fact that the main character’s mother could lose her sanity to keep her son’s life safe.
The first part of the book starts and takes place in a small and overwhelming room, where a young woman has spent seven years of her life, since she was kidnapped at the age of 19. After this tragic beginning, she was raped and she had a son, Jack, who has also had to grow up in this small space, where they lived away from society and where their unique escape was television and the little one’s favorite shows. To be more specific, during Jack’s 5 years in that room, his life was eating, singing, watching television, being the protagonist of the stories that his mother told him and hiding from a man who occasionally came to visit them. Jack doesn’t realize what’s really going on around him, as he lives in a safe and fun world.
One of the most important and interesting things about this book is that the person who is reading it feels and learns at the same time as Jack. Moreover, is astonishing the different ways that mother and son have of seeing the room is. The mother see the room as a prison because she is kidnapped, while Jack see the room as a shelter or a place out of danger, because he is a child and the mother has not told him the truth of their situation.
In addiction, what I liked the most about the book is how Jack learns everything he needs, without knowing why he will need it and once he is away from his mother, he uses everything he has learned to meet her.
I was dissapointed to see that the book lasted less than I wanted. Although it didn’t prevent me from enjoying this fantastic novel.
I would recommend this book to anyone who really likes family, thiller and dramatic stories, they will really enjoy it. It is suitable for all ages, and if I were you, I would stop reading this review and buy this impeccable book.
