The richest man in the 56-year-old world was worth $ 205 billion at the close of trading on Wednesday.

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon, is the first to cross a $ 200 billion net worth. It did so after Amazon's stock rose 2% on Wednesday.

According to Forbes, the edge increased Bezos' net worth by $ 4.9 billion. He was the first to amass a fortune of $ 200 billion in the nearly four decades that Forbes kept tracking the net worth of the world's richest people.

It did so despite the fact that Bezos recently donated 7,548 of his Amazon shares - valued at roughly $ 26 million - to an undisclosed nonprofit, according to a regulatory filing filed Wednesday.

The richest man in the 56-year-old world was valued at $ 205 billion at the close of trading on Wednesday.

Why is it important

With this development, Bezos is now nearly $ 90 billion ahead of the second richest person in the world, Bill Gates, who is currently valued at $ 116.1 billion.

Gates became the first person in the world to surpass $ 100 billion in 1999 when Microsoft peaked at that time.

Even after adjusting the inflation numbers, Forbes estimates Bezos' net worth at over $ 200 billion, nearly 80% more than $ 115 billion as of January 1, 2020.

This increase in net worth is said to be related to the change in consumer habits linked to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown in major cities around the world. Since then, Amazon stock has risen nearly 80%.

Note that Bezos owns around 11% of the shares in Amazon, which is more than 90% of his net worth, while his stakes in the Washington Post, aerospace company Blue Origin, and other private investments make up the rest.

Zuckerberg becomes a centibillionaire

In a similar development, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg became a centibillionaire with a net worth of $ 103.1 billion at the end of trading on Tuesday.

As a result of Facebook's stock gains, its net worth rose again by $ 6 billion on Wednesday, to stand at $ 109.1 billion.

LVMH Chairman and CEO Moët Hennessy Bernard Arnault has also claimed the position of third richest person with a net worth of $ 115 billion, recovering from the slip earlier this year at the height of the pandemic.

Backstory

In July 2019, Jeff Bezos sold 25% of his stake in Amazon (now valued at $ 63 billion) in what has been dubbed "the most expensive divorce settlement in history." His ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, who benefited from this deal, is currently the 14th richest person and second richest woman in the world behind L’Oréal's heir, Françoise Bettencourt Meyers. Even after giving away $ 1.7 billion in charity earlier this year.
