Peanuts Make Acne, Myth or Fact?

"Don't eat peanuts, you'll get acne on your face, you know." Often hear this sentence? Nuts are often touted as a trigger for acne. No wonder, many people, especially women, are hesitant to eat nuts. But, is it true that eating nuts can cause acne?

Causes of Acne

Basically, facial acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with a mixture of dead skin cells, dirt and sebum, which is a substance produced by oil glands that functions to moisturize the skin. Acne can also be influenced by hormones. In women, for example, most acne appears before menstruation and during pregnancy, because it is during these times that hormonal changes occur in a woman's body.

Face acne is also most often experienced by teenagers. The reason is, at puberty, the production of sebum by the oil glands greatly increases, it can even exceed the amount needed by the skin. In addition to hormones, there are many factors that trigger acne. One of them is the type of food consumed.

Relationship Between Nuts and Acne

In 2005 and 2006, experts from the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States conducted two studies to see the relationship between milk and acne. The results obtained from both studies are that consuming cow's milk can trigger the growth of acne on the faces of these people. Besides milk, nuts are also known as acne triggers.

Nuts do contain high fat, but not enough to create a buildup and blockage of fat in the skin pores to cause acne. The cause of acne is not actually peanut consumption, but because of an allergy to peanuts.

To find out if you are allergic to peanuts, you can try avoiding eating nuts for 1-2 months and then see the changes. If every time you eat peanuts, your face becomes spotty, but after two months of not eating nuts, your face is clean and free of acne, then maybe you have an allergy to peanuts.

Nuts are Beneficial for Skin Beauty

So, don't be afraid to eat nuts, because according to research conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is not caused by eating chocolate, ice cream, or foods such as nuts. Some experts even believe that eating nuts should actually reduce acne, because these foods are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory properties.

Some types of nuts such as almonds and cashews also contain oxalic acid which is good for treating skin and preventing acne. Soybeans are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are good for skin beauty. The omega-3 content of soybeans has been shown to fight inflammation in the body, prevent dry skin and make skin look younger.

If you want to eat nuts, you should consume roasted nuts. Avoid eating fried peanuts because they contain high levels of saturated fat. This is because the oil used to fry nuts contains saturated fat.

So, eating a lot of fried foods, including fried peanuts, can trigger acne on the face. In addition, you also need to limit eating sweet foods and high sugar content, because consuming too much sugar will increase insulin levels in the blood and trigger the production of androgen hormones that cause acne.
