5 Goalkeepers who have Scored a Goal in Premier League History.
Goals are indeed beautiful. They are followed by interesting celebrations from the players, the coaching staff, the spectators and of course fans worldwide. For good reasons, strikers are the ones that are expected to get goals for a team. They are the ones that are usually closer to the opposition goalkeepers. Occasionally though, some goals keepers have produced the goods for their team. The Premier League has produced a host of deadly strikers of the game such as Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Thierry Henry, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Aguero, Harry Kane to mention a few.
However, one thing you don't hear often is a goalkeeper scoring a goal. It is extremely difficult for a keeper to score a goal because they are usually far away from the opposition box. This is however, not impossible. Premier League has witnessed goalkeepers scoring a goal from open play.
In some leagues it is more common for goalkeepers to score goals. This is because some goalkeepers are the designated penalty takers for their teams. Some are often given the opportunity to take free kicks too. Therefore, it is a bit normal in those leagues when goalkeepers score goals. But the Premier is not like that because it is something special for keepers to score a goal.
Since the inception of the English Premier League, only five Goalkeepers have found the back of the net for their team. So, let’s look back at these bizarre and rare moments where the goalkeeper found himself on the score sheet.
1. Peter Schmeichel – Everton Vs. Aston Villa October 2001.
Peter Schmeichel is arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the Premier League. He is a multiple times winner of the trophy during his time at Manchester United. He is the first goalkeeper to achieve the rear feat of scoring a goal in the Premier League. Although, Peter Schmeichel was already known to be a goal scoring goalkeeper as he has scored for his previous clubs and his national team Denmark. But he was yet to do it in the Premier League.
Peter Schmeichel scored a goal in a game against Everton while playing for Aston Villa in 2001. The goal which was the ninth of his career was the first to be scored in the Premier League. Lurking at the back post, Peter Schmeichel volleyed the ball into the back of the net to score his goal. Although, the goal only proved to be a consolation as his side were trailing 3 – 1 before he scored. Eventually, his side lost in that game.
2. Brad Friedel – Charlton Vs. Blackburn February 2004
Brad Friedel managed to join this list by virtue of scoring a goal against Charlton in 2004. Friedel's goal looked to have earned Blackburn Rovers a point in the game as they were trailing before. But as fate will have it, his wild celebration was cut short after Charlton managed to score another goal that earned them all three points.
3. Paul Robinson – Tottenham Vs. Watford March 2007.
The third goalkeeper to score in the Premier League is Paul Robinson of Tottenham Hot spurs. He scored his goal against Watford in 2007. The goalkeeper launched a free kick from his own half into the other half of the field. The ball evaded all of Watford defenders and bounced over Ben Foster in Watford goal and nestling in the back of the net in bizarre fashion. The game ended in a Tottenham victory.
Tim Howard — Everton Vs. Bolton January 2012.
Tim Howard joined the list of Premier League goalkeepers who have scored a goal in 2012. With the assistance of the Godison wind, Howard cleared a ball from 92 yards to the Bolton goal post. Unfortunately for Bolton, the clearance disastrously for Bolton resulted into a game for Howard and his Everton side.
Howard's goal gave Everton a lead in that game. However, Everton went on to the lose the game 2 - 1. Another sad tale for goalkeeper who scored in the EPL to end on the losing side.
The last goalkeeper to score in the Premier League is:
Asmir Begovic – Stoke City Vs. Southampton November 2013.
Begovic is the last goalkeeper to score in the Premier League. This happened way back in 2013. The Stoke City goalkeeper as the time scored against Southampton in the Premier League. In what is one of the most surprising moments in Premier League history, Begovic clearance cleared the Southampton defense before bouncing over Arthur Boruc in Southampton's goal. This is one of the most bizarre goals scored in the division. It was supposed to be a routine catch for Boruc but it bounced before him before landing in the net.
It's been 7 years since then and no keeper has been able to score in the Premier League.
