Yesterday was the birthday of one of the greatest artist of the world S.M. Sultan.
The full name of the S.M. Sultan is Sheikh Mohammad Sultan. His father's given name was Lal Mia. He was born on 10 August 1923 in the village of Machimdia in the then Narail sub-division of Jashore district (now Norail distric). His father Sheikh Mohammad Messer Ali was a mason by profession who made many designs of land-lord houses at that time. In the eyes of Sultan, his father's work was considered more of an artist's work than a mason's work, which inspired him to become an artist.
Sultan addicted to painting since childhood. Despite various financial difficulties of the family, he was admitted to the school at an early age. But for Sultan, who grew up in the bosom of the river full with currents named Chitra, the free life of a bird was preferred to the rigorous schooling. He used to draw sitting in classroom or while enjoying the beauty of Chitra river. Rangalal Babu, one of his teachers, realized this talent of Sultan and gave Sultan all his knowledge taking him to his place.
In 1936 Sultan left school and moved to Calcutta to study art. But due to the financial crisis, it also fell into uncertainty. In this situation he was admitted to the Calcutta Art School in 1941 with the help of Dhirendranath Dutta, the land lord of his area, and Shahed Suhrawardy, a prominent art critic. At that time Shahed Suhrawardy changed his name from Lal Mia to Sheikh Mohammad Sultan.
Then, before the final examination of the art school, in 1944, Sultan went on a foreign trip and continued his paintings by observing the lives of different people of the world. Then, in 1948, he had his first exhibition in Shimla, India, in association with Mrs. Hudson, a Canadian woman. Then in 1947 (or in 1948) a solo exhibition of the Sultan was held in Lahore. Sultan's paintings were then published in European paintings with the paintings by world-renowned painters such as Picasso and Salvador Dali.He returned to Narail in 1953 after about 20 exhibitions at home and abroad. He founded The Institute of Fine Arts on July 10, 1989. Later, Shishu Swarga was established in 1986.
He found the main melody of his life in the rural life of Bangladesh, farmers and agriculture. His work of art has been most influenced by the history-tradition of abhaman Bengal, the history of revolt-resistance, revolution-struggle and survival in the face of various adversities. His paintings depict the fullness of rural life, the abundance of life as well as the class conflicts and the state of the rural economy, which have enriched the world's paintings.
The world-renowned painter was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1972, the Resident Artist in 1974, the Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad Samman in 1986 and the Swadhinata Padak in 1993. He also received Man of the Year from Cambridge University, Man of Achievement from the Biographical Center of New York, and Man of Asia from Asia Week.
Although he is no more among us today, he has left a history, a tradition, an ideal. That ideal will teach future artists for ages how to selflessly dedicate themselves to art. How to look at life more closely. So, the world remember him with respec.
