Today is the 79th death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

Rabindranath Tagore is the best writer of all time in Bengali literature. Apart from being a poet, he is also known as Gurudev, Biswakabi(Poet of the world) etc. Rabithakur was born on 7 May 1861 (Bengali 25th Baishakh, 1268 AD) in the famous rich and cultured Brahmin Pirali Brahmin family of Jorasako, Kolkata.

He did not receive any formal education in the childhood. Instead, he had a tutor at home. At a very young age, he had a strong love and attraction for literature due to the cultural environment of his family. He started writing poetry when he was only 6 years old and his poem 'Abhilash' was published in Tattvabodhani magazine in 1874, which was his first published work.

He first traveled to England in 1878 at the age of 17. Later in 1883 he married Mrinalini Devi. In 1901, he established the famous Brahmacharyashram "Santiniketan" in West Bengal.

He was simultaneously a poet, novelist, composer, playwright, illustrator, short story writer, essayist, actor, vocalist and philosopher. Rabindranath's 52 books of poetry, 36 plays, 13 novels and 36 essays and other collections of prose have been published during his lifetime or after his death. He has also composed 95 short stories and 1915 songs which are included in his collection of short stories and lyric poems.He has also contributed to literature and has painted about 2000 paintings. He is also the composer of the national anthems of Bangladesh, India and Nepal.

Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his English translation of 'Gitanjali'.

The features of his poetry are seriousness, lyricism, pictorialism, spirituality, love of tradition, love of nature, love of humanity, love of country, love of world, variety of ideas, language, rhythm and form, realism and progressivism. Rabindranath's prose language is also poetic.He gave his views on society, politics, politics through his literary activities and strongly protested against religious orthodoxy, bigotry, untouchability etc. His life was glorious in innumerable creative works.

He died at his ancestral home on August 7, 1941 at the age of 80 after a long illness. His contribution to world literature is indescribable. At his death, the Bengali nation lost their beloved poet and the world lost one of the best writers of all time. However, even though he is not among us, his literary work still carries the identity of the Bengali nation in the court of the whole world to make Bengali proud.
