The Independence Day of Pakistan celebrated on 14 August, is a national holiday commemorating the day in 1947 when Pakistan achieved independence and was declared as a sovereign nation, following the end of the British Raj. Pakistan came into existence as a result of Pakistan movement; the Pakistan movement aimed for creation of an independent Muslim state by partition of the north-western region of the Indian subcontinent and was led by All-India Muslim League under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The event was brought forth by the Indian Independence Act 1947 wherein the British Indian Empire was divided into two new nations — Dominion of India and Dominion of Pakistan (later "Republic of India" and "Islamic Republic of Pakistan", respectively).

On the Islamic calendar, the day of independence coincided with 27 Ramadan, which Muslims regard as a sacred night. The day is one of the national holidays in Pakistan. As August begins, various shops start selling merchandise related to the independence. On 14 August, the flag hoisting event takes place in the provincial capitals and all major cities. The main ceremony takes place in Islamabad, where the national flag is hoisted at the Presidential and Parliament buildings, which is followed by the national anthem, and live televised speeches by leaders. All across Pakistan the day is celebrated by flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, cultural events, and award ceremonies. Patriotic songs are played on radio, television, and at various public places. People place the national flag on their houses, vehicles and other personal property to show their affection towards their country.
