Freedom is having the authority to act or speak it is where you can change without constraint. It is being free to do what you want without punishing you for it, you are free to voice out your thoughts and seek for what is right. In the novel though, you wouldn't see this freedom. The novel illustrated the time where Philippines was colonized by the Spaniards, people cant follow what they want they are forced to follow what the Spaniards tells them to do, you can see it on the novel where the Spanish people rule the place you can’t ask or seek for change because then you will be executed. You have to learn the language, in other words they are changing the Philippines to be just like Spain. The Filipino’s are treated as underdogs, they can fight but at the end of the day they still have a little chance of winning. Some of the Filipino people in the novel suck up to the Spaniard in order to have power and rank. There are so much corruption and the people can’t do anything about it because if they try to complain and ask for fair treatment then they will be severely punish.
The novel’s lack of freedom is different at the present day, everyone gets to taste freedom even from the day they are born, you can work and even speak for your thoughts. There are no restrictions or whatsoever, I think that the Freedom today is being used in a wrong way by some people. They are always complaining and asking for better treatment when they can’t even contribute that much to the government, they want to be spoon feed and not work hard for it. There are still poverty going on and there are still corruption, but then again you can do what you want you can say what’s on your mind. You can achieve your ambitions, you have the ability to write and read because you are free to have education unlike in the novel where there are only limited Filipino kids who can study because of poverty. Now, we have public schools all around the country,
