Actress Whoopi Goldberg's outrageously strong words about the Holocaust
Actress Whoopi Goldberg's strong words about the Holocaust that caused outrage and got her suspended as a presenter...
Yesterday, February 1, actress and host Whoopi Whoopi through the U.S. talk show, commented some strong words about the Holocaust. "Let's be true to the truth. The Holocaust was not about race. The Holocaust represents man's inhumanity, but it had nothing to do with race. It was whites killing whites," Goldberg said on the program.
The Holocaust is known to have been the systematic, state-sponsored annihilation of European Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. The Jews were the main victims (6 million were murdered)".
This caused great offense and uproar.
The actress later apologized on Twitter and said that the Holocaust was indeed racially motivated because the Nazis considered Jews to be a distinctly inferior race. ABC New's president acknowledged Goldberg's apology, in a statement announced her immediate suspension and said she asked her to take time to "reflect and learn about the impact of her comments.
Monday's discussion was sparked by a Tennessee state school board's banning of a graphic novel about Nazi death camps during World War II.
The novel Maus, created by American cartoonist Art Spiegelman, which depicts Jews as mice and Nazis as cats, has won several literary awards.
The school board said it banned the book because its profanity, nudity and depiction of suicide were inappropriate for 13-year-olds.
The actress later apologized on Twitter and said that the Holocaust was racially motivated because the Nazis considered Jews a distinctly inferior race. I stand corrected," The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never change. I am sorry for the pain I have caused.
Because of the actress's words during the show, her co-stars questioned her words, but Goldberg continued to insist that the underlying issue was "how people treat each other," which led to the segment of the show they were on ending shortly thereafter. Of course, Whoopi's words caught the attention of viewers, which caused social media to explode, including Jewish leaders who rejected the actress' words, including the U.S. Holocaust Museum who tweeted, "Racism was central to Nazi ideology," adding, "Jews were not defined by religion, but by race, and Nazi racist beliefs fueled genocide and mass murder.
With all this ABC New's president acknowledged Goldberg's apology, however, in a statement she announced the suspension with immediate effect and said she had asked him to take time to "reflect and learn about the impact of his comments."
