Kicking the Sugar Habit One of the biggest ingredients in the food industry is sugar. It's in nearly every processed food on the market and is often disguised under other names. And it gets worse.  Because sugar is an added ingredient to almost every product on the store shelf, it's very easy to consume too much of the sweet stuff in high quantities and not even realize it.  Have you checked the ingredients label on your ketchup bottle lately? Chances are it contains sugar. That glass of wine you had at dinner? There's a really good chance it has sugar. Your favorite frozen meal most likely has some form of sweetener in it.  Now add that daily cup of coffee and slice of cheesecake and you're setting yourself up for a huge acne breakout, not to mention health-related issues like brain fog, tooth decay, and no energy. Sugar may even affect your mental health in more ways than just a foggy brain moment or two. It may also increase the symptoms of Autism and ADHD.  While not all sugar is bad for you, learning how to spot the difference between natural sugars found in fruit and added sweeteners hidden in prepackaged foods can help make a significant improvement to your health.  Plus, consuming less sugar can be beneficial in many ways. For example: You'll reduce your chances of an acne outbreak. And, as much as we may love chocolate or soda, our skin does not! Even your daily cup of cappuccino can cause an acne flare-up.  Your head will feel so much clearer and your memory could improve. Consuming a large number of sweets can cause brain fog, as well as memory problems. You feel more rested and alert.  That doughnut you had at the office can cause your energy level to drop significantly and make you feel tired. And if you're indulging in sugary sweets just before bedtime, it could make you feel restless.  Kicking sugar out of your life doesn't mean you have to consume dull and bland treats. You can replace refined sugar with natural sweeteners found in fruits and vegetables. You can even add a small amount of raw honey or maple syrup to your favorite desserts and even drinks.  When grocery shopping, try to stay with produce that isn't prepackaged. If you must purchase foods that are processed, check the ingredient label for added sweeteners like sugar, corn syrup, dextrose, glucose and,d high-fructose corn syrup. If you are in doubt, skip it and consider a natural food alternative or make it from scratch. Cutting out sugar isn't about sacrifice. It's about compromise and taking back your health, naturally. Why You Need to Drink More Water Summer is here and that means hotter weather and dehydration! Hydrating with water is the only way to satisfy your body's thirst.  Water is essential for keeping our skin hydrated, preventing headaches, taming bad breath and giving us a boost of mid-afternoon energy. Without proper hydration, our body can't function as well as it should. We tend to become easily distracted and less alert, which can become dangerous in certain situations like driving a vehicle.  Drinking at least 10 (8 ounce) cups of water per day is a must every day. When it's hot out, you should drink even more, especially if you are prone to sweating, spend a lot of timeout in the sun or you drink dehydrating liquids like coffee, alcohol and soda.  And if you're like me, you may find that it's not always easy to remember to drink more water. You might even feel like drinking water is a huge challenge, especially if you're not a fan of it.  One of the easiest ways I have found to meet my goal of 100 ounces of water every day is by filling a large water bottle or cup that you can carry around with you. You can even go all out and **buy a water bottle that suits you**!  https://amzn.to/3liRqhf If you still need a reminder to hydrate, there are many apps available that will help you keep track of your water intake and remind you when it's time to drink more.  If you don't like water, you can easily add a fresh slice or lemon, lime or orange to your cup to give your water some flavor. Koolaid and other sweeteners do not count and can actually leave you feeling even more dehydrated!  If the idea of drinking 8 to 10 cups of water is overwhelming, try breaking down your goal with 3 cups before lunch, 3 cups before dinner and 2 before bedtime.  Finally, keep in mind, there will be days when you will need to drink more water. And don't think for a moment that you can decrease your water intake just as soon as summer ends. Even in the cold months of winter, you can easily become dehydrated!  Related Links: **The Benefits of Healthy Eating For ADHD** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/54-The-Benefits-of-Healthy-Eating-For-ADHD-e108cs1 **How to Make Herbal Medicines** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/44-How-to-Make-Herbal-Medicines-er129e

Looking through my photos and found this one. It's of my grandparents, taken in the 1980's. And even though they are together in this photo, they were not together in life when I was growing up.

Winning the Chore Battle with Your Autistic Child One of the biggest battles this household often deals with is chores! Every Saturday morning is chore day and it often never goes as planned. **Children with autism** tend to struggle with details and chores are no exception.   https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/EP--5-How-to-Recognize-the-Signs-of-Autism-in-Your-Teen-efen1q With my son who has autism it's not as simple as sitting down to discuss what chores are expected to be done, especially now that school is out for the summer.  Autistic children often do better when they have a schedule to follow. The same is true when it comes to knowing what chores are a must on Saturdays mornings for my son before he is allowed to do anything fun.  To him it's not cool, but he also needs to understand that life isn't always easy and you have to work for the things that you want in life. There are definitely days where his thought process is more like he doesn't have to do chores because that's just not ideal for him. He doesn't like hard work and believes that everything should be easy in life, and that life's rules don't apply to him.  A visual or simple chore list might be the first thing a parent would consider for a child who has special needs, but it isn't always effective when they are teenagers.  Just like any teen there will be  times when they just don't want to do anything, especially housework! And while the chore battle is real, it doesn't always have to be a struggle.  Autistic teens like to have control. I know as a parent this is hard to do because well, we are parents, but they need to be able to make choices good or bad in life.  One of the easiest ways to let your teen have some control is by investing in a notebook of their choosing and have them write down each of the chores they are expected to do.  Stick to a schedule, but give your child some lead way by allowing them to decide which chores they will do first, and so forth. You could even let them decide what their chores will be, so that it doesn't feel like a demand.  You could even offer an allowance for chores outside their normal routine. For example if you have a garden, your child can pull weeds or pick ripened fruits or vegetables. For kids with slight to moderate autism they can help mow and weedeat the yard.  In the same notebook make a summer plan of having them set a few goals for themselves. My son's goals consist of enrolling in college, getting a bicycle for transportation and applying for a part-time job, all of which he has already accomplished!  Why am I suggesting goals in addition to their regular chores? If you are a parent working from home, you'll find that keeping your child busy during the summer will prevent boredom from setting in while you are trying to get work done. It's also a great way to teach them how to make good decisions for themselves.   One final thought for **winning the chore battle with autistic kids**, a schedule should be a must! Having a structured routine even during the summer months will help your autistic teen stay on track and keep chore battles to a minimum.  https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/28-How-to-Encourage-Chore-Your-Austic-Teenager-to-Do-Chores-eljfmj Related Links: **The Dangers of the Drug Seroquel in Teens with Autism** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/14-The-Dangers-of-the-Drug-Seroquel-in-Autistic-Teens-eisi73 **Unicorn Kids Chore Chart** https://amzn.to/3l7OUKq

What Are You Really Afraid Of Do you even really know what's keeping you from **living your dream life**? From doing every little thing your heart has ever desired. Why haven't you done it?  https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/62-Doing-it-Scared-and-Loving-it-e11nets Perhaps your mindset is focused on an excuse like time or no motivation. Maybe you need a cheering squad to get you pumped. Or could it be you're just not sure what your goal is.  Or maybe it's something more. Maybe you're afraid.  How often do you find yourself in a negative mindset without even realizing it until the damage is already done? It prevents us from living our life to the fullest.  A negative mindset can come out of nowhere, surprising even those who believe they have overcome the toxic thoughts. And if you have ADHD, that fear can take control of your life.  Do yourself a huge favor. Step up to that fear and take on the challenge. Don't allow anything to prevent you from living your dream. Take on your first goal and do it every single day until you have either made it a habit or you have completed it.  Then challenge yourself again and take on your next goal and repeat! In the end, you will find yourself becoming less afraid and more willing to take that risk! All it takes is one tiny step, one move to accomplish your goals. Believe in yourself and there is no stopping you!  Of course, you may still have moments where that fear of doing slips through, but it doesn't mean that you have to give in to it. You have every right to fight back and take control of your life. You have the power to create your future. Why are you still living in the past?  Related Links: **How to Take Advantage of Your Fears** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/61-How-to-Take-Advantage-of-Your-Fears-e11ndvq **ADHD and the Benefits of CBD** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/57-ADHD-and-the-Benefits-of-CBD-e10fd1i **How to Find the Calm When You Have ADHD and Feel Overwhelmed** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/55-How-to-Find-the-Calm-When-You-Have-ADHD-and-Feel-Overwhelmed-e108e80 **How to Turn a Negative Moment Into a Positive Opportunity** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/51-How-to-Turn-a-Negative-Moment-into-a-Positive-Opportunity-ev0f84

How to Get Back to Simplicity When Life Feels Too Complicated If you're a mom, chances are you stay busy, but if you are a mom with an **ADHD superpowered brain**, then you know exactly how complicated life can be most of the time!  https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/EP--3-The-Power-of-ADHD-and-Being-Your-Own-Boss-ef1k2a And then there's the idea that as a mom with ADHD we need to be perfectionists in every aspect of our life. It's never just good enough. We always have to make things much harder than they need to be.  For some of us, is it possible we are avoiding something bigger? Or are we doing too much?  There are so many goals I still have on my bucket list, that on some days I often wonder if they will ever be crossed off my list because I often find myself with too many pickles (*tasks*) on my current to-do list plate.  I knew I needed to focus on one goal at a time instead of several. I had to make myself focus and let me tell you, it wasn't easy! I suck at focusing. So whoever said life is easy is full of it!  But life doesn't have to be difficult either. It's only complicated because we make it that way. We throw ourselves into every task possible, full speed ahead because we'll be damned if anyone tries to tell us it's impossible.  Of course, it can be done! But then there's that huge thing called burnout! And all that we have done, has been undone.  It's hard not to be a perfectionist or to be working on several projects at once. Yet, I'm never going to get any of them done if I continue jumping from task to task. If I want to succeed I have to focus on one step at a time.  Focus if you must, one baby step at a time, but without hesitation. Keep going until you reach the end of your goal, then move on to the next one.  If you are not sure where to even start, focus on what you want to achieve in life. If you have more than one goal in mind, decide on the most important one and focus on it only.  Next, choose the easiest baby step towards this goal that you know you can take every day and do it! Don't complicate things.  Just do it. Take the easy path that doesn't require your blood, sweat, and tears, and get it done.  Do you want to know what the one goal I am focused on right now is? It's drinking 100 ounces of water every day. It does not mean I'm always going to knock that goal out of the park every day, but with my 100-ounce mug by my side, I'll find myself drinking water more often.  Finally, create a way to track your progress. Without a visual, it's easy to lose focus on your goal. For me, when I'm able to see my progress, it's encouraging and I want to keep going!  It's also a way for me to check in with my goal and make sure I'm still on task.  So when your life feels like it's too overcomplicated, slow down and start by focusing on the steps above, one goal at a time.  Related Links: **Doing it Scared and Loving it** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/62-Doing-it-Scared-and-Loving-it-e11nets **How to Take Advantage of Your Fears** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/61-How-to-Take-Advantage-of-Your-Fears-e11ndvq

Good Evening, I have been a busy body today because of a bit of depression. It's a part of my ADHD, so I'm learning to work with it naturally. As a result I will find myself staying busy with everything but work. Hence the food photo. I'm in the kitchen, cooking dinner. Smokey Chicken and bacon pasta in a simple cheese sauce. 💙

The Importance of Making Decisions When it comes to making decisions I've been known to stew on them for a good week or two because I'm just never sure if it's worth it in my **ADHD mind**.  https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/EP--3-The-Power-of-ADHD-and-Being-Your-Own-Boss-ef1k2a When I decided I wanted to start working from home again, I procrastinated about it for several months before I finally quit my 9 to 5 job and made my goal a reality.  It wasn't even my first time making income online, yet I could never seem to find the ideal time to make that life-changing decision until the Covid crisis had many families working from home. That was the kick in the pants I needed to live out my dream. It was now or never.  That was the best decision I ever made, even with the known risks, both big and small. Yet the rewards are worth it.  But in all honesty, I don't know if I would consider working from home online risk at all.  At that moment, I had no real debt and I had already saved up enough money during my months of debating when the time would be right to go back to work online.  I even had a plan, I just didn't put it into action until it was do or die, sink or swim.   Yet, I'm also a risk-taker, thanks to my ADHD! If I know the reward will be worth it, I'm all for it!  For example, when I had the opportunity to fly to Reno, Nevada for a poetry competition, I knew it would be a chance in a lifetime experience, and it was! Not only was  I able to share my passion for writing with the world, but I also had the honor of meeting actor Ted Lange, best known for his role as Issac Washington, the bartender from the 80's television series, The Love Boat.  Then, I made an even bigger decision and decided to publish the first part of my sci-fi series, ***"The Generation"*** after 10 long years of procrastinating over it because I  feared it wouldn't be good enough. It was a decision that would lead me to where I am today, working from home as a freelance writer.  https://amzn.to/3y0PnBI I took advantage of a situation that many of us struggled with and turned it into another opportunity of a lifetime. I created my own hours and set out to build a career online.  A career that didn't feel like work most of the time. Why? Because I was doing what I loved! I had turned my passion into unlimited income. But then one day, I started to wonder if I had made the right decision. My passion for writing began to feel like work, and it wasn't very fun! I avoided work and chose to take some time off, hoping it would pass.  I even found myself feeling afraid of what would happen if I made any more life-changing decisions until I realized I wasn't alone!  I had to face my fears head-on and remind myself that we are not perfect. That there will be moments when everything isn't going well and it feels like the entire world is out to get you. Lots of moments. But if you choose to move forward rather than throw in the towel and give up, you are a fighter in my book.  Instead of allowing yourself to admit defeat, keep moving forward.  Instead of dwelling on what was supposed to be, focus on what could be!  If you begin to experience burnout as I did, take a break and look at why it happened from a different perspective, then change it.  You may have stumbled across a roadblock, but it doesn't mean you should quit the fight! Find a way to face the music and move forward.   If you are afraid to make a decision because you don't know how others will react, then maybe you need to ask yourself this: If you are scared that their opinion of you will be negative, then are they really worth listening to?  Instead, surround yourself with those who do support you and appreciate your worth.  And if you are considering working from home, don't let my burnout moment scare you.  In all honesty, I still love working from home. I love the freedom of setting my own hours and being able to make it to appointments without stressing about the time.  And when I am working, I have control over everything that I do. If I want to work for a half-day, I can. If I am feeling extremely productive, I can work a longer day.  My point is, the decisions you make in your life, are yours to make. The choice has always been yours.  **Related Links:** **How to Focus on Your Health When You Have ADHD** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/56-How-to-Focus-on-Your-Health-When-You-Have-ADHD-e10f9ru **ADHD and the Misconceptions Behind the Mental Health Condition** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/43-ADHD-and-the-Misconceptions-Behind-the-Mental-Health-Condition-eq38m0 **EP. 6: The Generation** https://anchor.fm/thefightwithinher/episodes/EP--6-The-Generation-efp5j9
