No doubt the ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks have an unbelievable rapid development. With some surpassing Modern technologies. From them we learned medicine, machinery, mathematics, law, philosophy, and ultimately anatomy. With their great knowledge of anatomy they have been able to carve out most brutal ways to kill an enemy or punish an offender, although it might be quite disturbing, it's still fascinating to think this methods actually existed . I'm going to list them up and explain them in order ;
The brazen bull
Molten metal
Rats
Goats
Horses
Crucifixion
I'm the kind that likes to start from the bottom to the top in exams so let's get on with them shall we?
Crucifixion
This has to be the most popular death penalty ever, Jesus Christ faced similar penalties and most of his other disciples. This method is so brutal that it generates room for more than one cause of death. The slave could die of shock from exposed wounds because they are beaten severely and most times with sharp edge lassos, another is through asphyxiation ( suffocation) this is because the are hung from a height and eventually get tired which leads them unable to support their own weight eventually leading to a lack of oxygen. Another is wild birds viewing this helpless souls has an easy prey, lastly could most probably be from the heat.
Horses
Alright this one is very common also. We have probably seen this being portrayed in various movies but probably no keen explanation is done to why they would die . Well it's simple the prisoner is usually beaten and made weak, so weak to defend from any attack, then the prisoner is tied to the back of the horse and dragged by the horse. Why would a horse willing do that? Well the horse is also beaten hard for it to become furious enough to run at break-neck speeds. The rough terrain and rocks are usually the cause of death here, the prisoner hits their heads on every rock they come across and friction doesn't solve any problem here. Well if the prisoners fails to die form rocks, they would have to face been shattered to death due to friction. Eventually the horses would stop to rest, that's a bonus for a prisoner still alive.
Goats
Well this night be weird but ancient Romans did use goats to kill. Not by their horns though but rather by their tongue. This has to be the funniest yet most painful way to die, we all know goats have this thing for salt right, they love salt a lot it seems when you have salt you are able to control them literally. You could try it out let a goat lick you hand containing salt and then make a trail with it the would follow till the end, it's actually creepy to watch but you could still try it out. Salt is spread all over the prisoners legs most importantly the sole of the foot. And probably the hands also, goats are brought in and start licking up the foot and palm, eventually it would lead to intense pain and the lags would peel off gradually, but most importantly one of the modes of death is through ruptured brain aneurysm, this can be caused by laughing too hard.
Rats
Well this is quite simple. Rats are used to kill humans, we all know how deadly they can actually become especially when put under intense pressure, and starvation they can be extremely violent. Now they put this rats in a metal container and placed on the belly of the prisoner, sometimes they could make a little cut through into the prisoners belly. The metal container is then heated to a very high temperature that the rats are forced to eat through the prisoner. To me this is the most nasty one yet.
Molten metal
I just have to talk about this one. This punishment is given to those who commit incest and adultery in ancient Israel. The offender is originally hung with a soft rope to prevent additional suffering with a coarse material and when the offender starts gasping for air, hot molten lead is poured into their mouth. This has to be very horrific.
Brazen bull
In the sixth century, Phalaris, the tyrant of Akragas in Sicily, was given a device made by the sculptor Perillos. It was called βthe brazen bullβ. Made entirely of bronze and the size of a real bull, the prisoner was placed inside the hollow bull via a small door at the back. A fire would be set underneath, and the prisoner inside would be slowly roasted alive. The brazen bull had a system of pipes inside which converted the screams of the burning victim into βmooingβ that made it sound so closely related to a bull. The notoriously cruel tyrant Phalaris was shocked by the device and thought it appropriate to test the bull by throwing its inventor inside.
Which one is the scariest, say your opinion in the comment section.
