The Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island
Finally a sad news. Even such a traditional sculpture is in danger. The bronze coating on the top of the Statue of Liberty made of copper in storms and rains has turned green over the centuries. Meteorologists say that carbon accumulates in copper when it comes in contact with oxygen. Normal rainwater also reacts with copper. Thus the chemical reaction of water and metal has created this green color. And the wind accelerates the speed of this decay.
In 1936, for the first time, the Statue of Liberty underwent major renovations to protect it from climatic damage. Water leaks and other damage were prevented. However, in the course of time, this metallic architecture is in danger of being destroyed one day. So that no attempt to defend it will come to fruition.
The Statue of Liberty was renovated for three years from 1974 to 1973 and two years from 2011 to 2012. And how many more times this reform can be done - that is a matter of concern....
