Bentley's Paradox

Newton himself believed in this paradox. In 1892, Reverend Richard Bentley wrote an innocent letter to Newton. The letter contained a devastating question. Bentley's question was, If there are stars, the stars should come closer to each other. In this way, the universe is supposed to turn into a ball of fire. " Newton is quite unaware of this question in the letter, because it indicates a serious flaw in his theory of gravitation. If any theory of gravitation is attractive, the universe simply becomes unstable. A finite number of stars will inevitably fall under gravity.

In response to the letter, Newton wrote that the only way to create a stable universe was for the number of stars to be infinite and balanced. Every star will feel attraction in all directions. As a result, all balls will be canceled. It's a pretty clever strategy. But being smart enough, Newton once realized that such stability is confusing. Even a small vibration like a house of cards will cause the whole thing to collapse. Newton concludes that God Himself inevitably pushes the stars a bit in phases. The universe no longer shrinks. According to Newton, God intervenes in the stars as needed. That is why the universe did not turn into a ball of fire.

Einstein himself stumbled upon this paradox of 🔘Bentley in 1917. His equations correctly state that the universe is dynamic. The universe is either expanding or shrinking. Again the stationary universe is unstable and it collapses due to gravity. But then astronomers began to insist that the universe was stable and unchanging. So Einstein succumbed to the observations of astronomers. He then added the cosmic constant to his equations. This is the opposite force of gravity, which pushes the stars closer to each other to prevent the universe from collapsing due to the pull of gravity. Was to cancel the attractive force of gravity.
