Brenton Tarant, the Australian man who carried out the barbaric attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, has been sentenced by a local court to life in prison.
On the last day of the hearing, verses of the Holy Quran were recited in the court on Thursday and pictures of the victims and their loved ones were displayed. "You present yourself as a mentally ill person who hates other people who think they are different from you," Judge Cameron Mander told Tarant in court.
"You have committed a genocide," the judge said of Tarant, a believer in white supremacy. You have killed unarmed and unresponsive people. You have not apologized or publicly acknowledged the damage you have done. While I commend you (the court) for giving up the opportunity to use these processes as a platform, you do not feel remorseful or ashamed at all. '
The youngest victim of the Christchurch attack was named Mukad Ibrahim. He was just three years old when he was shot by a tarantula. Referring to Mukader, the judge said, "No parent can be normal after losing such a small child."
Dozens of survivors and family members of the victims attended the court hearing for four consecutive days this week. All of them demanded the maximum punishment of the killer Tarant. The court judge called Tarant's actions "brutal" and said no mercy was shown in the punishment for such heinous crimes.
Incidentally, on March 15, 2019, Taranto attacked Al Noor and Linwood mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. He opened fire indiscriminately with a weapon during Friday prayers at two mosques. He also publicized the attack on Facebook Live. The live video of the attack was broadcast for 16 minutes. Tarant, a believer in white hegemony, continued to fire one after another until the death of the worshipers was confirmed. The attack killed 51 people and injured 40 others.
