The Life Series: Take Care Of Yourself
If i were born in a 'first world country', i would probably have turned out to be a economist. I like to reduce almost anything to the laws of demand and supply, the mechanics of resources and scarcity. I started this series because I realize there are some knowledge that are just out there that will probably cause our lives to turn around if we just got to have and use them. Interestingly, most of them are really quite basic.
Earth is a very rich planet in itself, but not when you put its resources against the wants, need and luxury of a population of seven plus billion people, not to mention the unending exploitative tendencies of man. Naturally, where resources are limited, there's competition for the few available (This knowledge is especially monetised by the luxury goods industry).
With this competition, those of us not fortunate enough to be strong, educated or well connected are always at a disadvantage. We try to compensate for this disadvantage by working more, grinding more, making thrice more effort to get the same result/resource that some other people can get for less than 10% of our efforts.
This is especially worse for those of us with a kind heart and quite an unnecessary sense of responsibility to people around us. We tend to put the needs of others way before our own, so we have to do way more grinding than is necessary for the satisfaction of our needs and wants, be they basic or luxurious. Normally, this will be fine, but this constant grinding and struggle for limited resources comes at a price. This price could be our time, sleep, health, nutrition, hygiene etc.
The problem with this whole setup is that you're paying too much a price, quite frankly. Like Richard Templar would say. 'You're the boss, the captain, the driving force of your own ship. If you get sick, whose going to run the ship?'
In our quest to struggle and hustle to get enough to sort out all our trouble, we often forget we are human, not robots. We push ourselves beyond reasonable physical psychological and psychological limits, taking ourselves towards the ledge. The truth is this, if you don't know to take care of yourself, no one will. The things and problems you're hustling to death to settle will never be completely gone, if one goes, another will come, like my Nigerian folks will say 'Wahala nor dey finish' ( The troubles of life never ends (until death) ).
So, you should learn to take out time from your constant hustling to take care of yourself, your needs and your health. Take a break sometimes, go to the beach, have some sunshine, enjoy some relaxation and entertainment from time to time. You need it and most certainly deserve it. If you don't give yourself these things from time to time, then what's all the hustling for?? Come on now.
Go for the occasional, if not regular checkup with the doctor, try to get enough sleep, take time to care for your hygiene, don't be in so much rush, life will happen to you alright, you don't have to rush it, give yourself the occasional treat as often as possible, have fun, get entertained, love and be loved etc.
I know that to be relevant in today's world, we need to really hustle and strive, but that's not an excuse to neglect yourself, it's not an excuse to deprive yourself, it's not an excuse to condemn yourself to a life of unhealthy and deadly habits.
Conclusion
If you will not take this advice for your own sake because you feel there's a lot of people who depend on you for their daily lives, then do it for them, care for yourself for their sake, cause like I said before, if they all depend on you, who's going to run the ship if you fall sick, break down or finally go over the ledge.
Take care of yourself, live life, have fun, you deserve it....
