Sometimes, you may wonder why there is so much sadness in the world. Why do people get sick, and why do people hurt each other? When God made the world, He made everything beautiful and good. But many things in our world are not beautiful and good anymore. There is sickness and sadness, fighting and killing. Why did things go so wrong? It is because people did not obey God’s laws. They sinned and spoiled God’s perfect creation. God had placed Adam and Eve in a beautiful garden and He told them they were not to eat the fruit from one certain tree or they would die. One day God’s enemy Satan tricked Eve into eating the fruit. Adam ate it too. In choosing to disobey God, both of them sinned. God told Adam and Eve that because they sinned they would have to leave the garden. The ground would grow weeds and thorns. They would have pain and sickness and their bodies would die. The worst thing about sin is that it separated Adam and Eve from God, who is holy and perfect. Everyone who would be born into the world after them would be born sinful and separated from God too. But God loved Adam and Eve. He promised them that one day a Savior would come to rescue the world from sin’s punishment and bring us back to God.
