Battle of Kanauj
Humayun suffered a miserable defeat in the battle of Kanauj. He made the same mistakes he made in the battle of Chausar. Kamanchi's team could not fire a single cannonball.
A large part of Humayun's dispersal forces drowned in the Ganges. Those who survived were chased by Jalal Khan, the eldest son of Sher Shah.
In the battle of Chausa, Humayun fell into the Ganges. This time too it happened. He fell into the Ganges with the elephant. The elephant is moving slowly with him. Sher Shah's archers are holding bows. If they wish, they can shoot arrows and kill the emperor. They are not doing this. Because Sher Shah's strict order - Humayun cannot be killed or injured. He cannot be taken prisoner. He must be given a chance to escape.
Jalal Khan chased the defeated troops and took them to Delhi. On the fifteenth of July, 1540, Sher Shah ascended the throne of Delhi.
It rained heavily that day. There was no limit to the joy of the people of Delhi who had been restless for a long time. They went down the road to get wet in the rain. They noticed a very ordinary-looking man on horseback on his way to Delhi, soaking wet in the rain. This man has usurped the throne of Delhi. No one in the crowd understood that.
Humayun wrote a poem and sent it to Sher Shah from Lahore. The poem is -
Dar Aina Garche Khud Numai Bashad
Paibasta j khestan judai bashad.
Khud ra or mishle gore didan ajab asta;
ঈ Buli ajbo kare khudai bashad. (Gulbadan, Humayunnama.)
[Even though you look at yourself in the mirror, it is different. It is a great surprise to see yourself in a different way. This is the miracle of Allah.]
Sher Shah wrote in reply to the letter, I am a special idiot. Understanding the meaning of your poems is beyond my knowledge. I will leave to capture Lahore. It would be better for you to leave Lahore.
