Duke Theseus gets back from ousting Scythia with his new spouse, Hippolyta, and her sister, Emilie. Outside Athens, he meets a band of sobbing ladies and discovers that the despot Creon has killed their spouses and disrespects the dead by leaving them unburied. Enraged, Theseus rapidly ousts Creon and reestablishes the Theban dead to the people for stately covering. After the annihilation of Creon's powers, goods trackers track down two youthful knights (Palamon and Arcite) who are not exactly dead. Theseus stops the duel and reprimands the knights for their way of behaving. Palamon leaves out nothing, requesting that both be killed for their wrongdoings, and Theseus swears that the wish will be conceded, however he yields when the ladies of his organization ask leniency for the knights. Theseus proposes a conventional competition in one year with each knight upheld by 100 knights. The victor of the joust will get the hand of Emilie.

Toward the year's end, Arcite and Palamon, each at the head of 100 knights, return to Athens for the joust. Theseus invites them all and engages them in high style. On the night prior to the fight, Palamon, Emilie, and Arcite supplicate. Palamon petitions Venus, goddess of adoration; Emilie goes to Diana, goddess of virtue; and Arcite implores Mars, lord of war. All get a dream showing that their requests will be replied. The three supplications and coming about guarantees create turmoil in paradise until Saturn, divine force of fate, guarantees that Palamon will win his adoration and Arcite will win the fight.

The fight starts, and after much pomp and courageous battling, Palamon is severely injured and taken from the field. Arcite is pronounced the champ. Saturn sends a fierceness from Pluto to make Arcite's pony bashful. Injured, Arcite is conveyed to Theseus' royal residence. As he lies passing on, Arcite recognizes that he understands no individual better than Palamon and asks Emilie to acknowledge Palamon as her significant other. Arcite kicks the bucket and Theseus orchestrates an incredible burial service for him. After a significant stretch of grieving, Palamon and Emilie are hitched and carry on with out their lives in "an affection whole."
