Sometimes in life we can all feel like things will just never get better and that the crushing feelings of depression will never come to an end.

What is one to do in such situations of hopelessness?

If depression starts getting the best of you, the first thing you should do is focus your time and energy on yourself. Taking care of yourself emotionally, physically, creatively, and spiritually, can help transform the negativity into positivity.

Here are some steps you can try to refresh yourself and hopefully start feeling better:

1. Challenge your negative thoughts

Being able to spot when depression is bringing you down is the first step toward betterment. When feeling low, all kinds of negative thoughts can get the best of our minds, so it is key to able to keep them in check.

2. Stick to a schedule

Keeping up a healthy and regular routine is extremely helpful for people suffering from depression. Often, when faced with such an issue, our motivation tends to drop, making us feel unproductive and lowering our self-esteem. Schedule an every-day activity – make sure it is one you really enjoy and find meaningful – and aim for a day containing as much balance as possible.

3. Exercise and eat well

Regular exercise can greatly improve your mood. Pick the exercise of your choice and start doing it for 30 minutes to 1 hour a day, 4-5 days a week. In addition, pay attention to what you eat and drink, as the things you put in your body are also responsible for how you feel. You do not have to become an obsessed vegan to accomplish this, but avoid binge eating, carbs, junk food, energy drinks, soda, and too much sugar.

4. Avoid alcohol and other substances

In addition to eating healthily and doing regular workouts, you should limit the use of alcohol and avoid any mood-altering drugs. Drinking and other substance use may seem like a way to distract, distance, and numb yourself from the aches of depression, but it is not a healthy way to combat the problem; in fact, it will only add to it in the long run.

5. Improve your sleep

Getting the right amount of rest every night is crucial for your mood. People suffering from depression often report sleep disturbances – they either don’t get enough rest or oversleep. Go to bed, wake up on a regular schedule, and try not to do late nights. Having a broken sleep pattern will fuel your depression and make it more difficult for you to be social, exercise properly, and manage your stress levels.

6. Don’t underestimate the importance of humor in your life

Finding ways to keep your mood up by laughing will provide your mind with an emotional break from all the negativity that depression brings.

Whether this means talking to a friend or relative, watching an uplifting show or movie, writing funny stories yourself, it can all be of great help.
