We've heard a lot about Pandora's Box, but not everyone knows everything there is to know about its mysterious past.

According to Greek mythology, she was the first woman, created in the image and likeness of mortals by the god of fire, Hephaestus, with the help of Athena.

Prometheus had tried to steal the divine fire to give it to men, so Zeus, the god of the gods, ordered to punish them.

Each of the Olympian gods bestowed a unique quality on Pandora, giving her remarkable beauty, persuasion, physical ability, and grace.

Still, there was something else that was introduced to her, not by the gods, but by Hermes, their divine messenger and interpreter, who would give Pandora the gift of deception.

The legend of Pandora begins when Zeus gives Pandora a box for Epimetheus to carry. All existing males were contained within the box, and it was forbidden to open them under any circumstances.

Pandora was intrigued and eventually succumbed to the temptation to open the box, at which point all the males disappeared and were absorbed into mankind.

Pandora was terrified and closed the box in response to what happened, but was only able to leave one ingredient unharmed, hope, causing the humans to reject her.

Thus arose the legend and expression of the opening of Pandora's box, which represents the latest in the mythology of the doom of humanity.

Today, "opening a Pandora's box" is taking a minor or harmless action that could have catastrophic consequences.
