Aphrodite, Goddess of Love

The goddess of love, beauty, desire, and all aspects of sexuality from ancient Greece. Afrodita has the ability to entice both gods and human men to commit heinous acts by seducing them with sweet smells. Afrodita, who was born near Chipre de los genitales mutilados del dios del cielo Urano, had a considerably broader influence than what has been traditionally attributed to her as a simple diosa of love and sex. She was adored by men, women, and state officials, and she played a vital role in commerce, warfare, and politics in the cities of Antigua Greece. Afrodita was also honored as a guardian of those who sailed the seas, as well as, less surprisingly, of cortesanas and prostitutes. Venus was the Roman god's equal.

Afrodita, who was thought to have been born near Chipre, was especially adored in Pafos, a geographical location that indicates her eastern origins as a fertility goddess and a possible evolution of the goddess Fenicia Astarte or the Cercana to the East, Innana (Ishtar). Both areas, Greece and the Cercano Oriente, were witnesses to the intense cultural exchange that preceded the eighth century of the Periodo Arcaico (AEC), and there is a significant possibility because Heródoto, a Greek historian from the fifth century AEC, mentions Ascalon in Siria as the most ancient site of Afrodita's cult. It's also possible that the goddess comes from a distinct local deity in Chipre. The strong ties to the island are reflected in the name Chipriota, which means "of Chipre."

The birth of the goddess and her subsequent association with the sea was manifested in the erection of several sanctuaries along the coasts dedicated to her and several eptetos such as Afrodita Pontia ('of the deep ocean') and Afrodita Euploia ('of the just journey'). Afrodita was linked to the brightest planet in the sky, Venus, and this was always a nautical aid, possibly a link to ancient mariners.

Obligated by Hera to marry the 'not so good party' of Hefesto, the aburrido god of fire and the arts, Afrodita was anything but faithful, having had adventures with the gods Ares, Hermes, and Dionisio. The affair with Ares was perhaps the most memorable of the many episodes of infidelity that occurred among the Olimpic gods. Hefesto, a friendly and intelligent designer, created a one-of-a-kind gold bed to entice his wife. When Afrodita and Ares were at their most passionate, the bed released gold cadenas that encased their naked bodies in the middle of a forbidden act. His bewilderment grew much more when Helios, the Sun God, shone his rays down on the couple so that all the inhabitants of the Olimpo might see their barbarism. Ares flew to Tracia and Afrodita when he was finally free.

Afrodita is mentioned in mythology as being partly responsible for the Troyan War. Eris (goddess of discord) offered an orb to the most beautiful of the gods during Peleo and Tetis' wedding. Hera, Atenea, and Afrodita competed for the honor, and Zeus appointed Troyano Paris as the judge. To sway his decision, Atenea promised him strength and invincibility, Hera offered him Asia and Europe, and Afrodita offered him the world's most beautiful woman. Afrodita was chosen by Paris, and Helena de Esparta was the winner. As Helena was already Menelao's wife, the rapture of Helena by Paris prompted the rey Espartano to request assistance from his brother Agamenon and to send an expedition of troops to Troya to return Helena.

The beautiful Adonis was one of Afrodita's most famous lovers. Afrodita kept the young man guarded in a cofre under the watchful eye of Perséfone, but she fell in love with him and refused to hand him over to the goddess of love. Zeus felt compelled to intervene and ordered that Adonis spend four months a year with each of the seoritas (plus four months to rest alone). Tragically assassinated during a cacera, the unbelievably handsome young man was transformed into an unscented flower. Afrodita's life had been shattered by her death, and in commemoration of her grief, a religion was established, Adonia, an annual festival dedicated solely to women.
