Foolish bird dodo

Tahmina Music

Those who are interested in birds should not be unaware of the dodo.

Dodo's scientific name is Raphus cucullatus. They can't fly. Some believe that the name derives from the Dutch word "dodaars" (meaning short, thick tail). Again, many believe that the name dodo is derived from the Portuguese word "doido" (meaning foolish).

They could be seen in the islands of Mauritius. The main source of dodo food was the "tambalcoque" tree. Besides, the food list of these birds included nuts, fruits, tree roots, small insects etc.

Biologists believe that there were no predators in the area where they lived. That is why they lived so comfortably that they lost the ability to fly. As a result, some physical changes take place in them. The wings get smaller and the tail gets shorter and thicker. They used to build their nests in the ground and lay their eggs there.

Biologists also believe that pigeons and pigeons are related to the dodo species.

Dodo was 2 to 3 feet high. The average weight is 15 to 20 kg. The feathers were a mixture of gold and gray. They had hook-shaped lips about eight inches long. It is said that their lips were so hard that it was possible to break a coconut with it.

Dodo is also called lazy bird.

Now let's find out how dodo birds were discovered. From various books based on history, it is thought that they were first discovered by Arab explorers. But they didn't say much about dodo. Dutch sailors set sail for Mauritius in the 16th century and discovered dodos. And by the end of the 17th century, the bird became extinct within 75 years of human discovery.

Researchers point out three reasons for their extinction:

1. Dodo was a very stupid bird. There is a proverb in English ‘Death like Dodo’ meaning death like a fool. A death that the victim has no idea about. Dodo birds were not at all frightened when they saw people, but they would come to people in crowds. So these birds easily become prey to humans.

2. Cats, rats, dogs, pigs and other animals were taken with them by Western travelers and Dutch when they went to Mauritius. These were threats to Dodo's existence. They could lay eggs in the ground. It is thought that these animals would destroy dodo eggs, eat hatched babies, and destroy nests.

3. As these foreigners moved deeper and deeper into the island, the island's natural resources and ecosystems began to decline. As a result, not only dodo, but also various species of plants began to become extinct.
