Maheshkhali upazila is an island in Cox's Bazar district. It is located just 12 km from Cox's Bazar. It is rumored that the island was cut off from the mainland by a severe cyclone and tidal wave in 1559. The place was named after the Buddhist Sen Maheshwar about 200 years ago. Which is also known as Maheshkhali Island. There are three small islands named Sonadia, Matarbari and Dhalghata in Maheshkhali upazila. .This upazila has a reputation in the whole of Bangladesh for the production of betel, fish, dried fish, shrimp, salt and pearls.
