The complaints against Socrates were-

  • He was an atheist

  • He does not believe in the gods/goddesses of Athens

  • Socrates tried to make his own gods/goddesses

  • He was trying to make the young generation

Socrates was a man of honour. He had chances to save himself after his death sentence was declared. But he did not do that. Here's why.

After the declaration of his death sentence, according to the law of Athens, Socrates could have asked for reconsideration. The reason he didnot ask for that was he knew that if he did ask for it, it would mean that he has accepted the complaints against him. He knew that the complainers and the judges both parties did this on purpose.

Even he could have escaped by giving a high rate of toll. Still he didn't choose that path. His students like Pleto and others were ready to pay the toll to free him. But Socrates became very angry at this, because that would mean he has accepted the complains against him.

Socrates has never begged for anyone's sympathy. He has always tried to affect others with wisdom, truth and honesty.

Living and dying was equal to him. Only thing that mattered to him was the truth that everyone deserved. In his last speech he said some very valuable words. Everyone has something to learn from that.

The ending of his soeech was "I to die, you to live, only god knows which one is better".

The lesson we get from his life is that no matter what obstacle comes in front us, we should always stick to the truth. Because one way or another, the truth is going to reveal. There are many events in our lives where we do not reveal the truth because we do not want trouble. Even sometimes we do that to save ourselves and get others in trouble. We should stop that type of behaviour and follow the path of truth.
