As COVID-19 prevail and remain to spread around the world many lives has been taken and affected. Different sectors are forced to close as the employees too are struggling throughout the quarantine implementation but despite this pandemic we are going through there are still some sectors that are forcing to work.
The Department of Education, since the first month of nationwide quarantine, responds to the Pandemic by promoting online platforms for both the students and teachers. Briones, DEPED secretary, expressed her optimism about the online classes. She said that “education must continue even in times of crisis”. This statement comes into a great argument up to this time many are complaining regarding with this matter. Are Filipino students ready for this new type of era ? Or should it be considered to stop the education for a while until we break this pandemic ?
Academic freeze
We are facing such chaos due to the fast spreading of the virus globally. The Philippines is undergoing economical, health and social issues as the implementation is mandated. Therefore, it should be considered to stop the education for a while as long the issues still remain and there is no cure to stop this pandemic.
Academic freeze might and the best option as of now because education can wait and it is not a reason that the year is a waste we can still be productive, stay healthy for us not be affected.
Our health is more important because what is the essence of education if there's no student left? This should be the top priority rather than implementing the worse that could happen. It is not the perfect time for academic burdens.
Academic Continues
Public and private schools are now using online platforms and modular as well. We all know that this new normal of education most students are complaining with this new type of normal. Compliance with school requirements, can be costly for some students. The following are/could be the outcomes if the academic continues:
The disparity of gadgets and computers not all students can afford to buy those things students with a family of low income can't afford to do so. Also the internet connection students residing in provinces have low access of internet they cannot cope up with the lessons when using online platforms. Modular also is difficult because students are just prioritizing the deadline of submission rather than learning.
Mental health can be one of the factor too because students are having hard time to study and comply all requirements at the same time. As a young people we are still developing from social issues and purposes which is an essential factor of our well-being. In accordance to this, a new survey that sixty percent of college students are experiencing depression. Self study is hard specially when the lessons are difficult and a conducive space where you can study alone and quiet not everyone has a separate rooms to focus well. The household things to attend to at the same time aside from being in a state of mentally exhausted to physical and mental added inside the house it is not every family can understand how tired you are there are some you need to get things done too before you can go to class.
Financial problem in coping to the mandated online platforms. It includes buying gadgets and bills for internet connection. Since everyone is struggling due to the pandemic students families cannot afford to buy and pay. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the unemployment rate in April 2020 escalated to 17.7%, which is equivalent to 7.3 jobless Filipinos. Students are forced to gamble their nude pictures in exchange for money for their school expenses. Some are broadcasting through social media that they need help and financial assistance and financial rising to support their studies.
On the other hand, academic continues can be in a less hassle to go to school because you can just stay at home more interaction with the family however, we cannot guarantee the safety and the learning of the students. Also teachers are suffering too not just the students facing this "new normal" coping with the "normal" things before is such a burden to us all people.
