Coronavirus cases in the Philippines surged above 103,000 on Sunday, August 2, with the addition of over 5,000 new cases, another record one-day tally.

The Department of Health (DOH) reported 5,032 new cases as of 4 pm on Sunday, bringing the country's total COVID-19 cases to 103,185.

Of these, 2,114 were "fresh" cases, or those whose test results were released in the last 3 days, while 2,918 were "late" cases from the DOH's backlog.

It is the 4th consecutive time that a single-day record for new cases was set, following 3,954 cases reported on Thursday, July 30; 4,063 on Friday, July 31; and 4,963 on Saturday, August 1.

A total of 2,737 of the new cases on Sunday were from Metro Manila, while 463 were from Cavite, 449 from Cebu, 326 from Laguna, and 201 from Rizal. (READ: Why are coronavirus cases still increasing in the Philippines?)

This is also the 3rd straight day that cases reported in Metro Manila went above 2,000.

The Philippines' COVID-19 death toll also increased to 2,059, after 20 cases were added. Among these fatalities, 15 were from Central Visayas, 4 from Metro Manila, and 1 from Calabarzon.

In addition, 14 of the 20 deaths happened in July, 3 in June, and 3 in May.

Meanwhile, 301 new recoveries were tallied, bringing the total number to 65,557.

This results in 35,569 active COVID-19 cases in the Philippines.

The DOH also reported that 79 duplicates have been removed from the total case count, as part of its cleaning and validation process. Among these are 8 recovered cases from previous reports.

The department also said that one case previously reported as a recovery has been validated to have died.
