Fascism and Socialism are alike in one essential respect: both are responses to Capitalism. The free market takes precedence over national identity or allegiance. Capitalism tends to export labor or "globalize" to maximize profits, and common workers are alienated from their work and from their community. Where neoliberals completely ignore material reality and tell people to just pull themselves up by their bootstraps, that everything is already fair and it’s all up to personal responsibility, both Fascists and Socialists give common people something to blame. Socialists say: "Yeah, alienation from our labor is really harmful both spiritually and economically to most of us. What if the workers owned the means of production?" Fascists say: “Our culture is degenerating, and we must return to some ancient tradition from before everyone went all weak and gay! It’s probably all these immigrants and Jews. Let’s get rid of them first, and see how we feel after that."
