Khaled Hosseini was born in 1965 in Kabul, Afghanistan. His father was a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, and his mother taught farce and history at a large high school in Kabul. The foreign ministry sent his family to Tehran in 1970, where his father worked at the Afghan embassy.
They lived in Tehran until 1973, when they returned to Kabul.
