A newly married woman has been strangled allegedly by her husband and his family members for dowry in Mymensingh Sadar upazila.
The victim, Mahmuda Akter, 21, daughter of Abdul Halim of the upazila's Raghunathpur village, was a student of a college in Gouripur upazila, police said.
Firoz Talukder, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said Mahmuda was married to Sajal Mia, 24, a tractor driver of Sadar upazila's Sabjipara village, three months ago.
Since the marriage, Sajal and his family members had been forcing her to bring money from her father Abdul Halim. She took money several times, but her husband and his parents always wanted more, he said, quoting the victim's family members.
Later, Sajal and his family members started to press Mahmuda for money again, but she refused, which led to a family feud between her and her in-laws, the OC said.

Sajal and Mahmuda had a fight over the matter on Thursday. In the evening, Sajal called Mahmuda's parents over the phone informing them that she fell sick. Minutes later, he called them again and said she was dead.
Mahmuda's family members rushed to Sajal's house in Sabjipara and found her dead. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medial College morgue for an autopsy.
Halim filed a case with the Kotwali Police Station against Sajib, his younger brother Sujon Mia, 22, and their parents Shahjahan Mia, 56, and Mina Khatun, 55, for his daughter's murder.
Police arrested the brothers and produced them before a Mymensingh court yesterday, seeking a seven-day remand for each of them.
The court sent them to jail, said the OC, adding that the other two accused were on the run and that they were trying to arrest them.
