Did you know that the Monroe Doctrine, which indicated that the U.S. would not intervene in European affairs but that its field of concern covered the whole Western Hemisphere, was proclaimed by President James Monroe this day in 1823?

The Monroe Doctrine is the famously recognized U.S. policy toward the Western Hemisphere. Covered in a conventional yearly message presented to Congress by President James Monroe in December 1823, the doctrine warns European countries that the United States would not allow further conquest or pawn monarchs.
