What is Canton?

In the sixteenth century, Europeans trading in the port of Canton had to live and trade in a certain place outside the main gate of the city. He could never cross the main gate and enter his hometown. All their transactions had to be done through a government-approved merchant association called Ko Hong - under no circumstances were they allowed to enter China or buy cheap goods from other merchants. Their Chinese language and etiquette education was banned, and in Canton they were required to comply with Chinese criminal and commercial law. This system is known as cantonment.
